A New Game from Crystal Dynamics

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 6, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Square Enix, Inc., is excited today to announce TOMB RAIDER®,
the new game from Redwood City based studio Crystal Dynamics®.

'After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore
on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive'

Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey
of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.

"Forget everything you knew about TOMB RAIDER," said Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio, Crystal Dynamics.
"This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

TOMB RAIDER makes its worldwide debut in the January issue of Game Informer® magazine. The cover story
features 10 pages of exclusive content and is available beginning today for subscribers and on newsstands
December 11. Follow Game Informer on Twitter @GameInformer.

Some Points of Interst

Quote
    * Lara is 21 in this game
    * It's not only a reboot of the franchise but a reboot of the entire brand. As a result there will be no "real" Lara model this time.
    * They're doing performance capturing with this game
    * There are brutal deaths in the game this time. One is described as a deranged man stabbing Lara in the chest and then closing her eyes after she's dead. Another includes a boulder falling on her leg to trap her before another falls and crushes her head.
    * CD won't talk specifics on weapons but concept art shows a bow, shotgun and pistol
    * The lock on targeting system is gone and it now has a free aim system. CD says that it can compete with any of their competitors.
    * "I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," begins Darrell Gallagher, the studio head at Crystal Dynamics. "There was an illusion of freedom because of streaming and loading that would pop you out in a different location, but this is absolutely real. You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guide."
    * "It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Lara Croft emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a hardened survivor," says experienced director Noah Hughes. As the game unfolds, Lara will scavenge new tools and gear that augment her abilities. Lara's athletic prowess will also evolve. Some areas begin inaccessible due to physical limitations or scarce supplies. With the right skills and gear, however, the island is Lara's for the taking.
    * There are base camps in the game. Here you can combine items to create something new and access a skill system to upgrade Lara's abilities. You'll also be able to use base camps to fast travel to different locations to minimize backtracking.
    * You'll need to gather food and water in order to survive
    * There are humans in the game, including some of the crew members from the shipwreck off the coast of the island.

I dont know if many people here like TR but anyway. It has been a rumon since a long time, some concept art and features were "leaked" and now Game Informer made it official

It seems that dark & gritty reboots are all the rage nowadays

Seriously, why? I don't actually follow the Tomb Raider series so I have no idea if this kind of thing is normal but why would anyone want to see the player die in increasingly violent & disturbing ways?

All she needs to be is hot, and from the looks of it, she is.

Never got a Tomb Raider game. That looks cool though. At least you would still think it's Lara Croft. I'm sure I won't buy it. I never mind seeing Lara around in ads though.

I played about half of the orignial Tomb Raider games and this 'reimagining definitly doesn't sound like any tomb raider I've ever seen, let alone played.

Seriously, why? I don't actually follow the Tomb Raider series so I have no idea if this kind of thing is normal but why would anyone want to see the player die in increasingly violent & disturbing ways?

Tomb Raider was essentually all about 'raiding' tombs for treasure and artifacts. This game from the sounds of it comes off as mostly a 'survivor type' game rather then the traditional games we're all used to (I'm guessing there eeking a little bit of Resident Evil into this to up the ante a bit). Lara Croft does die in some rather horrible ways in the old games, but I think they're just kicking it up a notch for this one. I think I'll give this game a shot when it comes out though I will force myself not to expect a whole lot (Just so I don't dissapoint myself). And yeah, I have to say that this new look for Lara Croft is dynamite.  :o

On the other hand most of her deaths were stupid in the latest games, also she kinda became a doll when the health bar reached 0

It looks "Darker and Edgier" than the originals.

On the other hand the previous reboot Tomb Raider Legend was Lighter and Softer than the original.

I know, right

This rebooting/revamping trend is a bit scary. Every other franchise these days are going down the "omg forget everything you know!" route.

Though maybe it's nothing new. SEGA f*cked up Phantasy Star, Shining Force and Sonic ages ago. SquareEnix only recently ruined Final Fantasy (IMO) by making it "new" and "appealing" to a different crowd. Before that they pissed on Seiken Densetsu for a number of years. Capcom erased every bit of horror from its Resident Evil series and turned it into a straightforward 3rd person shooter. Konami outsourced basically EVERYTHING and destroyed Silent Hill in doing so.

Now, the Castlevania reboot actually turned out fine. The Devil May Cry reboot on the other hand, looks downright worrying. Meanwhile, Nintendo claims that they're doing something completely different with Zelda: Skyward Sword. It doesn't look too different from what I've seen, so I expect streamlined, simplified gameplay and gimmicks a plenty. Metroid Other M, while not a reboot, makes me worried for the future of Metroid. And what will become of Metal Gear? GTA? Waaaaah!  :(

LOL, I am exaggerating now, I know. But still!
Lara Croft totally looks like a Ninja Theory character in that picture though. Dunno... maybe I'm just having a really bad day today. It's not Lara's fault. Nor any of the above mentioned games.  :-\

Tomb Raider always sucked.... so it can't really get much worse for me since it's already at the point of play it for a few seconds for a crotch shot >.> then quit lol.

Though that recent XBLA looks a bit intriguing.

No way, the new Lara looks way better than her cartoony look.

Dante's new looks like a big piece of emo, Scott Pillgrim reading indian style in the aisle, hot topic wearing, anorexic, Edward Cullen piece of molten lava grade A monkey crap!

Well, I said siblings, not twins. But yeah, Lara is definitely the better design. I still see quite a bit of Ninja Theory in her face though, albeit more detailed and overall nicer.
