I say CVIII. I died more times in CVIII than DXC, though the new alternate stage 5 and hydra are pretty brutal.
I now Prossess a what?

I'm going to also agree that CVIII is the more challenging game.

It does not also help that CVIII does not have infinite continues or being able to resume your saved progress much like you could in DXC.

I actually voted for DXC.  I know people talk about CV3 being hard a lot, but I never thought it was that tough.  I find Chronicles, Bloodlines, CV1, Dracula XX SNES, Rebirth, and DXC to all be harder than CV3.  Maybe I'm just funny like that, as I'm obviously in the minority.

Thats kind of surprising. I can get all the way to the final stage in CV1 without dying, but I haven't been able to beat CV3. I can get pretty far on the Alucard path, put if I go with Sypha I can't even beat the boss of the Ghost Ship stage...

I think CV3 might be the hardest game in the series (Chronicles is up there too for that stupid werewolf, but I had no problems up to that point), this of course is not counting that absolute bullshit in Haunted Castle.

I thought CV3 had infinite continues. The only one that I can think of that didn't was Bloodlines.

CV3 is factually harder. You have less mobility, you take more damage, opportunities for lives are less frequent, and the journey is longer.

Haha the werewolf has one very important weakness (other than correctly timed jumps), the silver dagger.

Heh someone said CV 3 was harder than Ghouls N Ghosts, not in a million years sorry, though it is up there. I remember writing down passwords for every stage for every character (except Trevor/Ralph alone). DXC I had no troubles with, CV 3 took a little practice, but eventually I beat the game with everyone, these days I'm very rusty (need to play it again for the hell of it). I've 1 lifed CV 1 all of once, 2 lifed it a few times, 1 lifed both quests of CV 4, CV 2 had it's moments, mainly in not getting lost. Bloodlines has limited continues that kinda drives the diifculty up a tad, but practice makes perfect,

CV Chronicles PSX even in original mode isn't quite as hard as the original X68K version, that one seems to be a bit harder than it's rerelease counterpart on PS 1. Castlevania XX aka Drac X SNES, now that I own a copy I need to work on it (US version a kind friend who used to post here long ago sold to me), it's definitely harder than it's PCE counterpart.

Now Vampire Killer on the other hand is a tad more forgiving due to aesthetics (finding keys to unlock doors, crazy stage design, and now that I have one of the Japanese versions of Haunted Castle PS 2, it is more tolerable than version K of the US release. Seems to use one of the easier Japanese romsets ( the Oretachi Geason releases all used MAME).

And awww hell you guys got me talking CV again, I thought I was cured, that's ok I have a lot of stuff CV and otherwise to play.

I will say III but in all fairness you only use one character at a time for DXC. III does it for me not only due to the Abandoned Mine stage but also if you were to go through III only using Trevor it is really tough. The trouble I had with DXC was Death and Annette and later Dracula's true form. With III Death was a problem as was the Doppelganger.

Remember my name and know this. I have Suffolk Down Syndrome.

Stop me if you've heard this one.

CV3 is way harder. Granted DXC was hard first time I played it. However, now I can easily beat that game within an hour and not die once. CV3 is still hard for me.

The first CV: Chronicles I beat the arranged mode right away, I think even the day I got the game. The original mode took a little longer, but I love how they packaged both together. It's a faithful retelling of Simon's journey through the castle and showed many more areas that CV1 did not. I love that game.

As for CV3, it's definately one of the hardest in the whole series and easily the most difficult of the "Classic 4." However, it's the kind of difficult that you ALMOST don't mind dealing with because the game itself is just so epically beautiful. The story, the music, and the overall atmosphere are just fantastic. In fact, the first 4 CV games still have some of the best atmospheres in the whole series, even to this day IMHO.

The only thing in DXC I find of comparable difficulty to Castlevania 3 is the Hydra.  But... that's probably tougher than anything in CV3.

The Hydra was a two-stage boss fight that I wasn't expecting when I first came across the final level. In fact after playing that secret stage in the original Rondo, I wasn't expecting the Hydra in DXC. At all. Sure took me by surprise!
