Topic: Whats Castlevania known for?

i'm kinda newto the series and stuff...since ive only played harmony of dissonance and aria of sorrow. I liked them, but i dont really see what's so special about them. I think its just because i haven't played the well known ones in the series, or AoS and HoD were the worst one in the series or something.

I have yet to beat simons quest because of the  " What a horrible to have a curse" thing    grrrrrrrrrrrr

CV as a whole is known for it's platforming, unique enemies and excellent music. Most people on this forum love AoS because it reminds them of Pokemon, and a lot of prominent members here are Pokemon fanatics/advocates that originated from Pokemon forums.

HoD is a hit or miss title here; a lot of people love it & a lot of people hate it. There are many other noteworthy titles, such as Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania IV and Symphony of the Night. Ask us anything about any CV game and we'll do our best to convert you!

They were some of the best side-scrollers to date and several were painstakingly detailed, even by today's standards. Even if you look before Symphony of the Night, you have Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania IV, Bloodlines, Rondo, etc......all of which had things that made them unique.

Case in point, I never played Rondo of Blood until a few years ago, and I still thought it was a fantastic game, even with today's modern advancements in gaming.

It's not for everyone.  Try playing Symphony of the Night.  It is the most well known and was the first of the "metroidvanias".  Metroidvanias (like Symphony of the Night) are like the original games in which you go through the castle with the intention of killing Dracula with elements of the metroid series and other RPGs.  Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow are metroidvanias too. But, Symphony of the Night is the one of the best, if not the best of the metroidvanias.
Another game I recommend is Super Castlevania 4.  It is one of the old school games that goes stage by stage with no RPG elements.  Despite this, it is still a fun game and in my opinion the best of the old school games.
Also, if you have a PS3 or XBOX360, you can try Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.  It is different from the other games in that it doesn't fit into the so called castlevania cannon.  Lords of Shadow is in essence a "reboot" of the series.  Some people love it, others hate it.  I, like some others, are somewhere in between.  There are some aspects we like and some aspects we don't.  Regardless, playing it is a great experience.

If you play these four games, you will get a good feel of what Castlevania is all about and what it is known for.  Keep in mind that I recommend that you actually play these games.  Watching videos of other people playing on youtube doesn't give anything close to the feeling of actually playing the games.

I'm more of a oldschool gamer unlike most people of my age (16) so I'm pretty sure i'll get into the series. On-topic, I thought aria of sorrow was a good game, i just hated all the backtracking -___-

First and foremost, in my opinion, Castlevania is known for its music. The track "Bloody Tears" were remixed and remastered countless times officially and by fans. The worldwide Video Games Live concert tours would always have a Castlevania medley in their playlist.

Secondly, Castlevania is known for it unique lineup of heroes; The Vampire Killer wielding Belmont clan, Alucard, and Soma Cruz.
And then, there is the platforming and infamous Medusa heads that brings players to their untimely deaths on all the 2D games.

Yep, gotta love those Medusa heads.

And last, but not least, Dracula returning for every game. He has got to being one of the most active villains besides Bowser from Super Mario Brothers. Every time something goes wrong in the Castlevania universe, it's always Dracula or someone trying to resurrect him.

Pretty much, without Dracula, there will be no Castlevania, period.

My recommendation for such an introduction would be Super Castlevania 4 even though it is a remake of the original Castlevania for the NES. The gameplay is top-notch, the graphics are awesome, the music is dynamite and the difficulty factor really kicks it up a step when you get to the last few stages of the game. SCV$ is also the first time you fight Slogra and Gaibon and man! Are they a trial by fire!

Castlevania is known for it's inherit quality. At the time of their release, with very few exceptions, each Castlevania game is the cream of the crop on that console. With solid gameplay, incredible graphics, amazing aesthetics, and some of the best music in gaming history. They are always pushing the boundaries, much like SquareEnix.

Simon's Quest was very frustrating for me when I first played it. But after mastering it, it's a cakewalk. But by no means is Simon's Quest anything like Super Castlevania 4. That I can guarantee.

Maybe Castlevania (1986) is the daddy of the action/platform genre where the player doesn't stomp enemies (like Mario) but instead uses a melee weapon, as well as a few sub-weapons (or magic). There wouldn't be a God of War without Castlevania.

The series is known for great graphics, gameplay, music, a high level of overall quality. With a few notable exceptions (Judgment, Haunted Castle), there hasn't been a really bad Castlevania game, and even the bad games still have great music (I'm looking at Judgment right now).

Mandatory playing: Super Castlevania IV, Rondo of Blood (Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP), Symphony of the Night, Lords of Shadow, and from the DS games, Order of Ecclesia.
