Huh, maybe it's only in UK printing of the manual. I downloaded a scan of that from Replacementdocs, but seeing as that site's dead (again...), I'll throw it up on MediaFire.

Concerning the early Japanese manuals, I'm going by the translations Gecko made available some years ago. I said "apparently" because I haven't seen the manuals myself... not that I have any particular reason to think those translations were faulty, but I don't want to present secondhand info as absolute fact.

That is definitely different from the NTSC-U text. The story at Mr. P's page for it is from the American version. It's much longer and a bit more thorough (except regarding the Christ thing). Perhaps they thought we needed a bit more elaboration, seeing as we never got the "real" story of the original.

Transylvania - a small, peaceful country in the heart of medieval Europe.

The people of Transylvania whisper the legend of Dracula to their children at bedtime, only half-believing it to be true. "The forces of good keep a watchful eye over the land, protecting all who live here. But even during the constant vigil, the forces of evil manage to prevail once every century. (The UK manual contains nothing about telling them the legend at bedtime nor "the forces of good;" this whole senetnce is simply replaced with "once every 100 years, the power of Christ grows weak," and then segues into the next sentence.) Each time this happens, human beings with evil hearts begin to chant unspeakable prayers. This is Dracula, the Prince of Darkness, resurrected upon the face of the Earth. And each time he is manifested, his powers grow stronger." Once, long ago, Dracula was indeed revived in this manner. However, his ambitions to plunge the world into darkness and build a kingdom of evil were crushed by the hero Christopher Belmont.

Following Dracula's demise at the hands of Christopher Belmont, the Transylvanian countryside slept peacefully for 100 years. Then one Easter night, the townspeople were celebrating the joyous holiday (UK manual reads "Christ's resurrection") with a splendid carnival. But, in the ruins of the old monastery on the edge of town, the followers of darkness were holding a Black Mass to revive the evil Count and give him eternal life. They poured a sacrifice of human blood over his remains. As they did so, an ominous thundercloud enveloped the town. Suddenly, a single bolt of lightning pierced the monastery. In that instant, Dracula, the Prince of Darkness, returned to this world to begin a new reign of terror.

But all was not lost. The successor to the Belmont family bloodline, a young man by the name of Simon, was determined to rid the land of this terrible evil. Taking the mysterious whip left to him by his father, he ventured into Dracula's castle to face the Count - alone.

From the way this looks it definitely did undergo a religious purging before its North American release.

"Metroidvania" isn't dead, it's just resting. I'm sure Konami will return to the formula once they get their priorities straight. And then everybody will start to love them again.


As for the 100 year rule thing, maybe COX would say he came up with the idea, just like he thinks Dracula used to wear a mask

I guess Konami's Castlevania Facebook page had a post that asked something like, "In a perfect world, what would you want for the 25th anniversary?" Considering the timing, I wonder if they're just doing it for the lulz...

The use of that phrase seems so arrogant to me. Maybe it's best read as "In the unlikely event that we're finished pimping Kojima..."

Indeed.  To me it implies that nothing further will be revealed at TGS --AND they're not particularly sorry about it.

On another note, I think you guys are reading too deeply into the wording of that post. I'm willing to bet that them finally acknowledging the 25th Anniversary means we'll actually get SOMETHING. I hope to god it's not a Symphony remake like what a lot of people seem to be asking for. I own that game too many times already.
