Has anyone ever used a whip?

Just curious if anyone has used a whip in real life or even seen one used?
Nothing scares me, I'm a smart guy and I'll tell you one thing for certain: fear is irrational. Being the know-it-all I am, mocking foolish fears is an amusing pastime for me.  In fact there is no doubt in my mind that living in the modern world, free of all danger and uncertainty, I'll ever have to face my own death, which is after all the most basic and silly of all fears...

I tested out the 10ft bullwhip I use in my CV cosplay. It's more than a little difficult....especially at that length.

I keep a 6' whip coiled up on my desk next to a picture of Leon Belmont. I first bought it for a Franziska von Karma cosplay a long time ago. I kept it and when I rediscovered Castlevania I realized "hey, I have a whip too."

Yeah, I used it during my Franziska phase, but mostly wound up breaking things, so it's merely for decoration now...

The end of it has unraveled and I've since put electric tape on it; the tip is actually deadlier than it was when I bought it and could probably give someone a good sting if I tried.

During my youth I was so enamored with CV (Back in the late 80's) that I took a long plastic skipping rope, cut the end off and taped up the handle attachment. Wah-La! It was relitivly easy to used and didn't hit myself all that much. To this day I still don't have a real leather whip. But maybe someday I'll get my hands on a Henry Morgan 9-footer Bullwhip and start practicing. But to have a realistic looking Vampirekiller would require me to know Smithing (to an extent)  :)

I started with a 6ft whip, gotten off my senior trip to Disney world, from the Indiana Jones souvenir shop. It was surprisingly fairly well made for a theme park souvenir. Obviously not really high quality, but for a training whip, it served its purpose quite well. I learned on that, and beat it to hell. It unraveled and got repaired a bunch of times, until it really bit the bullet. It is now currently 3ft long, haha.

My best friend at the time had ordered a high quality 10ft leather whip then for my birthday. That is the current one I use. it was quite an adjustment, but I can use it fairly well now. It is much heavier, and harder to control than the 6ft whip. I haven't really brought it out for use since I moved to a more dense neighborhood area about a year ago though.

I've never used one but I remember this video being the response to the argument that a fire whip is bullshit:

Damn right fire whips do work. Fun as hell too. They don't last too long though. Wouldn't ever do it to my good whip either.

Yeah, I got my hands on one at one point, but didn't really use it all that often. Swung it around a few times.

Anyone ever try using one of the whips from CV2? Like the thorn whip or chain whip? Not the funnest things to twirl around (thorn whip stinging like a [expletive deleted] if you hit yourself or others with it, the chain whip being a little heavier than I'd like).

Yeah, I should have said that the 10ft whip I have is seriously heavy-duty wrapped leather, and due to it's weight, has been hard to break in and even harder to control. Thus far I primarily keep it coiled up and bound together to keep it from unraveling, and hook it to whatever belt I use for my cosplay. (has looked great with my Trevor and Richter crossplays)

If you think handling a 10 footer is tough then check out these vids! Adam Winrich is seen swinging a 22 foot long bullwhip and a 4o foot long whip!!

The 40ft is just lol

That's so awesome. He should have at least tried the overhead swing. That would have been epic.

And yes, part of the thing is as Sindra says, you do have to break it in too. His 22ft looked really nicely broken in. I'd love to try it out.

My friend from college bought some stainless steel rings (the kind you use to make chain mail) and soldered himself a 6-ft chain whip.  He used a squared-link formation so if you looked through the chain, you'd see a squared array of links.  Although he did not make the handle, the thing is HEAAAAVY!  I can definitely see that chain whip cracking some real skulls should one have the muscle to wield, swing, and crack it.

chain whips are awesome. I used to have one I made a few years back. I also had a hand made 6ft bullwhip made by native americans in the smokey mountains. I used it every single day until I put it down one day and I think my granny or my uncle one threw it away (ya know older ppl are) Same thing that happened to my scythe...

Thats been many many years ago tho. I dont even have the chain whip I made anymore. No idea what happened to it. Just lost over the years. I always think about gettin a new (real) whip like kangaroo hide but theyre so damn expensive!

Theres always a weapon vendor at the ren faire that has nice whips maybe Ill actually be able to afford one next year...
