Big deal if one looks like the other, it's not a copyrighted (far as I can tell) idea, to me they are all gimmicks anyway. The SNES had shoulder buttons back in the day, the PSX and Saturn also had shoulder buttons, no one complained even though both systems came after the SNES.

One good thing about the retro and older gaming scene, we don't worry about things like this and whether one systems controller looks like the others, we play games.

I was actually gonna bring up the shoulder buttons thing, but never mind. :P

I complained. :P (back in the day)
I think that, while the technologies are not identical, it's clear who's pioneering them and who is doing ripping off.

Note: This is mostly for CONSOLES, I'm uncertain about the PC market, so if anyone can fact-check on PC controllers, let me know, but:
Nintendo created the D-Pad in a world of joysticks. Sega followed.
Nintendo created the shoulder buttons.  Now we've learned to depend on them
Nintendo created the first analog sticks (for consoles).  Everyone is following that to this day.
Nintendo created the force-feedback feature on consoles.  Everyone followed (even when Sony didn't want to with its SIXAXIS).
Nintendo created the first appropriate motion controllers and games to match (as opposed to old peripherals like the U-Force which would just translate motion controls to button presses).  Everyone else followed.
Nintendo has just released the first glasses-free 3D handheld.  Now some smartphones are ripping off that same technology.

Man. Nintendo keeps on bringin' the good stuff.

not to mention 1st 3-d console (though unused in GC) and first Console with online capability, The Famicon.
Look at the xbox 360 controller, now look at the GC Controller.
The only reason the Sony Playstation Exists is because of a rustle up with nintendo and sony, it was originally supposed to be a disk expansion to the super famicon
Move is Just a reverse engineered Wiimote
Avatars and PSN were brought to you by Miis.
SEGA was the only gaming compay that didn't rip off nintendo.... they were just 2 Gens ahead half the time....

I gotta hand it to Sony though, at least they copied only nintendo while Microsoft has that Failed overpriced unresponsive Eyetoy

@Jorge, I'm pretty sure PC had analogue flight sticks and forced feedback before Nintendo, but I think everything else holds true.

That's why I said with consoles. I am pretty sure PC gaming had flight sticks that were analog, but I also don't think they made analog sticks as small as the N64 one. Could be wrong, though.

Still a solid point, though.

I don't believe Nintendo came up with this concept though they would be the first to implement it on a handheld system. I remember seeing an add for a new type of 3D depth TV flat-screen a while back. And this commercial came out before I had even heard about the 3DS.

How a while back, cause they announced the 3DS was coming last year and they were very happy to mention the glasses free 3D immediately.

Not too sure but I'm fairly confident that it was before. Like the 3DS the 3D TV doesn't require glasses either. SONY, iPONT and others have showcased their Glasses free 3D TVs.

I wouldn't doubt if it wasn't even a big name corporation that came up with it first. The big guys buy tech off smaller innovators all the time.

Wow, you're a big nintendo fanboy huh? Some of these ones aren't really that useful... some are not even true at all (or at least, Nintendo wasn't the first to release or upgraded a existing concept and made them popular).

BTW, I don't see the point in Wii U just yet. I'm still skeptical about motion controls to this day, doubt I'll really like them someday.

Um... I think Nintendo did do must of this stuff first, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

D-Pad: Nintendo Entertainment System
Shoulder Buttons: Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Analog Sticks: Nintendo 64
Motion Controls: Wii
Glasses-Free Handheld: Nintendo 3DS

I believe all those are indeed the first. I could be wrong though, since I'm not exactly savvy in that stuff.

I dunno about the other stuff Jorge mentioned...

So you don't use D-pads and you don't use shoulder buttons/bumpers/triggers. Just what the hell exactly are you playing anyway? Atari, or are you PC-only?
