This is so depressing. We'll never get a true Castlevania game like this, and by true I mean one that  has the Castlevania name. It feels and looks like a Castlevania alright. The guys at Konami should have used this game instead of LOS to reboot the series.
It's a shame really that some other game company is able to make such a tribute to CV, while Konami doesn't give a fuck about her own franchise's anniversary .

Fuck yeah, everyone has been saying how much Dark Souls is like a real 3D Castlevania and I completely agree with them. Plus the fact you can get a whip and throw daggers and axes makes it even more awesome.

Looks awesome.  I'll probably watch a playthrough on youtube before trying it for myself.

Do they mean gameplay(more traditional 3D platforming?), because looks-wise, Dark Souls looks NOTHING like CV. I'd go on to say it looks as much CV as LoS does.

Unfortunately, I'm limited in funds, and Batman: AC is a must buy for me. Love me some Batman, I sure do.

I hate to say this, but I'll pick up Dark Souls when it hits the bargain bin. I'd love to be able to afford the full retail price, but it's just not gonna happen. I feel bad, but then why should I feel bad about being poor?

In regards to gameplay, Souls' combat is more tied to Castlevania's combat, rather than its platforming. Both emphasize a sort of caution and puzzle-solving that LoS and other brawlers lack. That combined with the weight and emphasis on truly understanding how you and your enemies move is at the heart of both Souls and classic Castlevania.
The way they describe the non-linear progression also seems to link it more to Castlevania than, say, Elder Scrolls.
I think looks-wise, it's a lot closer to Castlevania. It's a rawer western fantasy akin to Super Castlevania IV, without the influences of DnD and etc. Admittedly, most other Castlevanias are more about a whole slew of mythologies or about a castle full of pulp horror movies. Of course, if you want to go into that pulp direction, Souls covers that with its music.

In any case, it's okay that Souls is striving to be more than just something Castlevania anyway. Worked for Devil May Cry!

Though, in Demons Souls, there was that one crazy platforming part... that helps you skip like 90% of the level. In the mines, where you go down a number of jumps and reach the boss a bit after.

Playing this game right now, actually. Just got past Phalanx and I'm loving it. I could see how this could be considered the modern equivalent to the classic style of Castlevania games. Not so much visually (though I've only been to one level so far), but it feels like it has the same spirit of those games, for sure.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

this game has as much to do with Castlevania as donkey kong.

Yes, some enemys could be in a castlevania game. But are u serious? i mean look at the character.
And there are so many games out there, u walk thru a castle.
I dont think a castle and some dark enemys explains castlevania.

u can get a whip. nice? Indiana Jones uses a whip. Dont think someone ever would say, "god damn, thats like castlevania" would you?

I hate it to say but, even LoS has more to do with it. Finally it got the Name Castlevania on the Cover...

If you take classic castlevania, update it a tad, and put in 3d, you'll have Dark Souls.

but I can say the EXACT same with all Metroidvanias, sure they are involved story-wise, but they resemble close to nothing on the classics.

and the 3d Vanias.... N64 ones aside, 2 Devil may Crys and a Dynasty warriors are not castlevania.

Castlevania isn't Hack'n'Slash Grindfest with Kindergarden Puzzles, the Quicker IGA and Cox will learn that, the quicker Castlevania can be castlevania.
