Which games are complete assholes to you and yet, like an abused spouse, you keep returning for more?

Recently I've been playing through Nemesis '90 Kai and, even on easy, there are points that make me want to tear my hair out, such as when I'm an idiot and die on the first level by running into a rock. But I've steadily gotten better with practice, and just today I was able to make it to Stage 7 or 8. I was so pleased with myself, I almost forgot I'll have to do it again backwards after a certain point. -_- In spite of this, it's an awesome game and I hate Konami for porting it to nothing.

There's also BC Rearmed, which I beat on Super Hard. Looking back on it, I'm surprised I never injured myself out of pure rage.

So is this about games we hate or about games that we love but kick our asses?

Hmm... I guess the games are either:
1. retro games that are good, but "Nintendo Hard" or
2. games we shouldn't like but are drawn to them out of addiction, or something?

Out of Category 1, I'm a big fan of Gradius games, especially Gradius Rebirth, but it totally kicks my ass sometimes!  I'm like NOH!
I recently finished Super Mario 3D Land and, while the game is easy if you're just parkouring through the stages, if you're trying to get the Special Coins and such, you will get frustrated.  I have screamed at the DS Like "NO YOU ASSHOLE!" more than a few times.

I don't think I've got one for Category 2, though the Pokémon games come pretty close.  Every time a new one comes out, the rational part of me is like "Oh no, not another one.  C'mon Jorge, you know it's just a collecting fest, and you already 'nearly' have 'em all..." but then I'm like "BUT I MUST ADVENTURE IN A NEW WORLD AND BE THE VERY BEST LIKE NO ONE EVER WAS!"....aaaaaaand that's all she wrote.

Although the ending isn't very rewarding for Nemesis 90 Kai in my eyes, it's still worth going through to see what Cores Konami threw at you in that game.

I meant the latter. Sorry for weird phrasing.

I would have to say the prinny games for me. They're stupidly hard, but yet I like them for whatever reason.

I guess I enjoy dieing over and over in video games, or something.

The Ghosts 'N Goblins series definitely gets my vote for one of the hardest side-scrolling platform games ever. Only one direction (or two with later additions) you can jump in, only a few hits you can take before being exposed down to your boxers then death, unpredictable enemy patterns in a lot of cases (Red Arremer? Bastards), and then when you think you've finished you find out you have to do it all over again for the real ending? FFFFFUUUUUUuuuu... still, brilliant series.

for me, i have a weakness for the thunder force games on the megadrive, but these games always kill me! x_x
even on the easy/normal modes, the enemies and often the speed are just plain merciless!!
and good luck trying to figure out what that voice says when you start tf2! ;D

and i also should have mentioned the gradius games :)

Castlevania Chronicles.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Terraria. Everything in this game kills you. Especially if you go into the Jungle, and even more especially if you activate Hardmode by killing the Wall Of Flesh. Great game though.
