Just a rumor, mind, but still cause for casual interest.

If nothing else, it seems like Nintendo is making a good effort to reclaim their financially safe position. As I see it, recent losses in profits are driving them to try to push out a product that will appeal to old and new demographics, which while it won't be as revolutionary as the Wii, it's an experiment nonetheless, and furthermore, one that has to my knowledge only ever been pulled off completely successfully by the Playstation 2.

Thoughts on this rumor?

How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Gonna be expensive as hell.

My sentiments exactly.

People forget these days how pricey the PS3 was upon its release.

Sure it was superior to the 360 as far a specifications goes but it still cost the consumers a buttload of cash just to buy it which caused the loss of alot of its sales when competing with the 360.

Its nice to hear that the Wii U will be more "powerful" but power doesn't mean anything when your price is so damn high that the average consumer can't afford it.

Also have to remain skeptical because Nintendo has a history of awesome releases that didn't pan out to the hype Nintendo generated. The predecessor to Duck Hunt was supposed to replace bowling in Japan, but that fizzled when the economy tanked. The Virtual Boy... I need not say more (although I love that system nonetheless, since it was a revolutionary idea and it was Nintendo's fault for pushing it into the market before the technology was actually there). The Wii revolutionized gaming, but I never got the impression it was going to beat out Sony and Microsoft on the market. Sony disappointed me with the PS3, but Microsoft lived up to my expectations. That said, I don't think the Wii U will be all that great and something tells me developers will still steer toward Microsoft and Sony for their next game.

More than just twice the power of the Wii U if this rumor is true. Of course such simplistic metrics aren't always a reliable measure of power.

I'm waiting for the day that Console prices pass the 1,000 dollar mark.

The home version of Neo-Geo was over a thousand back in the day. Hell, some of the games were a few hundred each.

Nor are they a measure of quality or fun.

I expect the Wii U to have graphics exactly like the ps3 and 360. The ps3 is supposedly more powerful than the 360, yet all the games look basically the same. This "twice the power" stuff sounds bogus, especially considering that games like Arkham City will be ported to it. I'll eat my own hair if it looks or performs twice as good as the original. It's gonna be the very same game.

Yeah, twice the power, whatever. That might mean one thing, but there's no way games will look twice as good. If they have better textures and little details look better that's great. But I doubt games that are on all the systems will look too much better on it. I'll also be pleased if there is no screen tear whatsoever. A minor thing that bothers me a little on a few games I love for 360. In any case, If I can play a Metroid game with graphics on par or a little better than the 360, that's awesome and plenty good! And... a Monster Hunter game like Tri would be fantastic with great graphics and chat ability (I know there is a headset for Wii, but who uses it?). I'd play the crap out of that.

Dunno if true, but I'm told Nintendo has stated that not all games on the Wii U have to be HD. I was really, really hoping they'd make true 1080p (non-upscaled) a requirement.

I have no qualms with 480p material on an HDTV via component, because it looks beautiful, but this still bugs me.
