Curse of Darkness still has one of the best soundtracks ever.
This.

CoD's stage and cutscene themes are excellent, but I always thought some of the boss music could be better. They were kind of samey, except for Drac's and Issac's respective battle themes.

A Toccata into Bloodstained Darkness is still one of my favorite boss themes of all time.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Lament of Innocence. I LOVE those songs. It's one of the Castlevania soundtracks I've always loved to listen to outside the context of the game. Highlights for me include Leon's theme(near the end of the game, with that badass piano), House of Sacred Remains, Joachim's boss fight theme(I know it's technically a Symphony remix, but whatevuh). Also, Gardens forgotten by Time, and the Aquaduct. Cool music.

EDIT:
Hey, why isn't Bloodlines on here? She did that one, right?
And I can't remember if she did Harmony of Dissonance, but if so, where is it?

Bloodlines, while amazing, was not a soundtrack I counted among her best, so I lumped it with the "something else" option. To me, Curse, Lament, and Symphony are her best works, in that order.

Love pretty much all her music except for some of CoD and PoR. I think once you listen to one person's music a lot you get to hear some of the repetitions and other stylistic stuff they do... which has kinda ruined some of the aforementioned games' music for me. Like Yamane's stock arpeggios that are way abused in CoD (see Followers of Darkness #1, The Curse of Darkness, Mortvia Aqueduct, etc) and PoR (Crucifix Held Close), but for every one of those there are a good number of brilliant tunes like Victorian Fear or Jaws of a Scorched Earth.

What I want to know is what Soshiro Hokkai is doing these days (if that's his correct name, HoD and Nanobreaker composer)?

Walter's battle theme.

Castlevania Lament of Innocence - Dark Night Toccata ~walter's Theme~
Laura and Gabriel arrive in the deepest cave of the castle and... they find IGA.

Yesssssss! Lament had the best battle themes, especially for the Golum. But man, Walter's was pure power. The first time I played Lament, I was reminded of Chronicles' arranged version of Bloody Tears, for some reason.

Walter's battle theme was full of power. Just... raw power. It stands tall among Yamane's work, and could easily go multiple rounds with Proof of Blood, Dance of Illusions, and A Toccata into Bloodstained Darkness for a contest of best final battle theme in Castlevania, although I'd hand Dance of Illusions the battle for "Most Iconic Final Battle Theme" in the franchise.

Ah, okay. I remembered that she'd had something to do with the soundtrack, I just wasn't 100% on how much.

I picked SotN, not so much based on technical achievement, but it feels the most balanced of the OST's. It is so varied and takes from a bunch of different styles. You can really see Ayami mixing it up and branching out into other territories and achieving very good results.

Lament and Curse are still top contenders for me none the less though.

And that's my biggest problem with SOTN OST. It's so disjointed. It doesn't create a unified picture. It's like some bits and pieces were thrown in, without much care how they clash together. And while by themselves, those tracks are excellent, combined they create some strange puzzle picture, as if created from different pieces picked up from different puzzles, IMO.
