Exactly. Dracula and Soma are one and the same person. One soul. But because of certain aspects of the AoS and DoS story it becomes a little disjointed to grasp. You cannot separate Dracula's soul from Soma's because he is Soma. Dracula was his former physical identitiy. But Soma Cruz is now his current physical identity.
Yes. Soma is Dracula reincarnated. Celia and the "dark lord's candidates" were trying to create a new dark lord. The candidates do have a connection to Dracula. Supposedly, like Graham from AoS, they were born at the exact moment Dracula was destroyed in 1999. As a result, they received some power from him. However, to truly create a new dark lord, they needed to do away with the old one (even if he has been reincarnated).
That being said, in my mind, there are only two individuals who can legitimately claim the title of Dark Lord: Soma Cruz (Dracula reincarnated) and Alucard (Dracula's only child). Keep in mind that neither of them want it.
I'm still really surprised that Death never talked to Soma in either of the Sorrow games. I'm also surprised that he was a boss in DoS. I would think that he would be trying to protect Soma and do away with Celia and the "candidates".

Plot oversight I suppose. the game demanded Death. :P

I personally feel that IGA didn't think things through clearly enough when he created this story arch of Chaos being the source of all Dracula's evil. it's just one of the many ways you can tell he's not a very good story-teller.

Well, IGA started as a scenario writer in Tokimeki Momorial. He was a programmer before that, but we are talking about story writing. Castlevania is way different from a dating sim. I could just say, he tried his best. Western ideas of how the series should go might be a little different from what the Japanese want, I suppose.

Plot oversight I suppose. the game demanded Death. :P

Or maybe Death was testing Soma if he really wants to do without Drac's powers or not. The game should have more dialogues to make the plot better. But sadly, I think IGA is pressured by the time constraint.

Or maybe Death just didn't care and attacks Soma because despite being his reincarnation he isn't the same Dracula anymore or something?

I figure it's just the guy from the novel who figured "well hey, if Soma is Dracula, wouldn't Death, his best bud and right hand man, approach him like 'yo, Somula, wanna hang out and be a badass lord like you used to be?'" and wrote that in, where IGA and his writers just never considered it.

If IGA and his writers never considered it, I doubt that it would appear in the novel to begin with.

Was IGA involved with the novel?

Why doesn't someone just translate the whole thing?  And yes, I know it's easier said then done, but considering how many of us want to know what happens, it would be well worth the effort.

BTW, don't look at me to do this. I DON'T speak Japanese and I have no plans to learn how to. However, I will be very grateful to whoever translates it (assuming it someone ever does).

Nagumo paid a guy to translate it and is fixing some errors with the help of other users, you should check her topic.

Just to clarify:
Nagumo's translation in progress is the novel "Akuma no Chi Chi no Akumu" --> Simon Belmont as a Crusnik, but the story is told from the point of view of a priest.

Koutei's scans are for "Ricordanza of the God's Abyss" the DOS sequel.

Why doesn't someone just translate the whole thing?  And yes, I know it's easier said then done, but considering how many of us want to know what happens, it would be well worth the effort.

Cuz I am busy. And the rest of us are busy. I was hoping others would translate it, but nope.
Please be patient people.
I'll try to work my butt translating during the Holy Week provided I am healed from the colds.
Kanjis are argh.... and the Castlevania series is loaded with them.

Nagumo paid a guy to translate it and is fixing some errors with the help of other users, you should check her topic.

Yeah his translation is very literal. The story's dramatic flavor was lost, I believe.
