I'm looking for sidescrolling platformers with gorgeous 2D hand-drawn visuals, preferably in the 32-bit era or earlier.  Stuff in the vein of Symphony of the Night, Rayman, Lomax, or Yoshi's Island.  Even Metal Slug, though I'm looking more for platformers than shooters.  I love lush, vibrant animations and detailed, imaginative backgrounds.  Nothing 3D or Flash, though I don't mind occasional 3D effects such as the coffin save rooms in Symphony of the Night.  Does anybody have any recommendations?  Here's some examples of what I'm looking for:

Symphony of the Night:

Rayman:

The Adventures of Lomax (PS1):

Flink (Sega CD):

Yoshi's Island:

Metal Slug:

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm looking specifically for 2D hand-drawn games.  Strider 2 is a great game with a unique art style, but it's largely 3D and not what I'm looking for.  Same with Klonoa and Tomba, although I haven't played either of those yet.

Astal, Silhouette Mirage, and The Adventures of Little Ralph all look great.  I had the Megaman X Collection but gave it away because those games frustrate me so much.  But I really need to track it down again.  X4 does look very nice.
