Link is an orphaned youth living in a modernized city similar to New York. The game actually looks like it takes place in our world, Earth. There are many legends of an alternate dimension that ancient humans once inhabited, before the politically-corrupt powers-that-be took control of Earth. He is a typical bad kid, but one day receives a mysterious letter from an unknown source, signed "Z." It tells him to go find the old priest Sahashrala in Europe. Sahashrala tells him that he is of royal lineage, gives him the royal sword that has been used in his family for centuries, and he must collect 4 crystals located in several "mystical" spots of our world (Stone Henge, Easter Island, etc.). But before he can find them, he must first enter the portals to the "Dark World" that are at these spots, so he can truly locate them since they don't exist in our dimension. This "Dark World" resembles Hyrule but a lot more dark & gritty. Link traverses this world finding the crystals, all the while going back & forth to Earth for side missions and transportation. Lots of "reimagined" enemies & characters. During one of these many journeys he finally meets Zelda on Earth, the daughter of a Diplomat bent on controlling the world by opening the portal to both worlds. Once Link collects the crystals, Sahashrala appears & steals them, kidnaps Zelda and flees to Earth. Distraught over his betrayal, Link goes after him & finds him in Trump Tower, where Zelda's father is also located. Sahashrala reveals himself to be a pawn of Zelda's dad, who reveals himself to be a sorceror that's bent on resurrecting the devil Ganon using the crystals to take revenge after Link's ancestor sealed him. He reveals that he raised Zelda to be a sacrifice to Ganon, as the ultimate sign of his loyalty to him. But he also needed the power of the combined crystals to merge the dimensions. The merging of the 2 dimensions will release enough energy to break Ganon's seal. Link is defeated, but in a mystical state, his ancestors revive him using Holy power. A reinvigorated Link takes his sword, now transformed to the Master Sword, and defeats Zelda's dad, much to her sadness. Sahashrala then has a change of heart, since he was unknowingly corrupted by the evil magic, and attempts to stop the crystals from merging the worlds of Earth & Hyrule. The various monsters of Hyrule begin to manifest themselves on Earth. Sahashrala is too late, and discovers that the merger will be complete in 7 days, causing utter chaos. However, Link gets caught in the rift, and is transported to Hyrule at the top of an ancient temple. Now for the plot twist
it is revealed that Hyrule is actually the true world, and Earth is the dark world, albeit masked by propaganda & false truths to keep the inhabitants (us) in check. Ganon hated Hyrule & placed a terrible curse centuries ago that caused everything to be opposite.
Link, determined to get back to Earth & set things right, gets on his newly-befriended horse & embarks on a new journey. Roll Credits.
After-Credits Scene:
Sahashrala instructs Zelda to get on a helicopter to flee Trump Tower. He walks towards the crystals but is stabbed in the back, killing him. A well-dressed man then walks passed him & grabs the crystals, his face is never seen. He looks on as Zelda's helicopter takes off. He then retrieves a cellphone from his coat pocket & answers, saying "I got them." He turns around, and leaves in a portal.
any & all plotholes will either be ignored or explained in Legend of Zelda 2: Ganon's Awakening
