Topic: Gaming in the house or gaming on the go?

Many people are talking about gaming going to mobile and handheld units and dying in the home. If you have been paying attention, more people seem to be buying 3DS and since March (probably before) articles like this have been written. There are and always will be die hard fans of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. This will never change especially when a company like Nintendo has been making consoles in the US since 1985 (and Japan even before that). But the 3DS beating out the Wii U does say something for what people actually want. People go outside and they want to take their gaming with them. Nobody wants to or can stay indoors all the time or even as much as one may remember as kids anyone did playing video games all day. Since the days of the Game Boy its been very common for someone to decide not just to go to the beach to relax but to play games while you're there. So you guys tell me what you prefer. Gaming in the house or gaming on the go?

My friends and I all game in the home, but I do own a few handhelds. These handhelds though I use in the home as well, it's the place I feel most comfortable gaming in. I also feel comfortable at my friends house, we both come from the old school and will likely play this way till the day we die.

I also don't own a cellphone and don't ever see myself gaming on these things, nothing beats having a real controller in hand in front of a good sized TV. This is why my consoles see more play time than my handhelds, though to be fair the games I have on my handhelds will likely control better than some cellphone game.

I play my handheld games at home.  My consoles are already dead

When I was single and without children I used to play in consoles much more. But now days my chances of taking over the living room to play a game are few and far between. I game mostly on my ps vita now days.

I don't think that the 3DS outselling the Wii U is indictive of a shift in what the consumer wants. I think it only shows how terrible sales of the Wii U are. Last time I checked, the Wii U is Nintendo worst selling console ever.

Nintendo really needs to step up in general and re-enter the competitive gaming market with a console that appeals to hard core, serious gamers. They haven't interested me in years. I only bought a 3DS for the dissappointing CV MOF.

I had a 3DS, and was rather disappointed with it. Once again it had dated graphics,  and the absence of dual analog sticks. I sold it after 2 months.

I think if the mobile gaming market is ever going to take over consoles, the mobile consoles will have to step up like Sony has with the PS Vita.

Unfortunately, sales of the vita haven't done so well, mainly due to lack of interesting games upon its launch. But now with incredible games like Killzone Mercenary, people are starting to buzz about it again. But with the new consoles coming out, it may be too late for the vita to make a big impact.

For me I have tried gaming on every type of machine imaginable including the IPad. I always seem to come back to either home console gaming or desktop pc gaming. I like the feeling of sitting in front of my 37 inch screen with a controller, keyboard, mouse etc. and playing a game. Though I don't own a console any more because I gave up on them. The last console I owned was Ouya and to be honest it wasn't what I thought it would be. For my next console I am leaning towards Steambox mostly because it will have the power of a Linux PC and a nice controller. I don't really like gaming while I'm out because I don't like the screen, I don't like the fact whatever you have may get lost if you're not careful, and finally I REALLY hated gaming on stuff like IPads cause the games aren't really that good at all and the touch screen makes it awkward to play. Just my own two cents.

I never bring gaming with me whenever I'm out of the house. I could lose it or someone could steal it, so I don't take that chance. Also whenever I'm gone on vacation I make it a point to leave my games at home so I can enjoy my vacation and concentrate on other things. I game in my home and that's where it'll stay for me.

I think you also have to consider the fact that console gaming as a whole isn't what it used to be. Maybe its because I'm old myself but PS4 and XBox One don't appeal to me any more than the Wii U does. I don't really like any of the consoles anymore. What I do like (other than Ouya) is some of the Indie ventures coming along. Why? Because it gives a chance for the average Joe to decide on what kinds of games they want to have on the console. I don't think having the Nintendo Seal of Quality or being under a huge publisher should matter at all. It shouldn't be about who makes the game, it should matter how good the game is and everyone should have the rights to make their own game and IP. Not to mention paying $70 or more bucks is also getting ridiculous for me especially since its only because big publishers are getting greedier by the day. A lot of the games haven't really gotten better or more unique for consoles enough to charge $70 bucks per game IMO.

Sorry if it bothers you, but I really want to hear about it since it seems to be good for emulation and Android games. I already know that its not a next-gen and dont expect wonders of it as it is now, but for emulation, videos and things like that its good? Im thinking about buying one in the future.

I would say as far as potential goes you won't get much out of it. 90% of the games on there to me just seemed like puzzle games or "collect all the stars and items and reach the goal" type games. Not to mention the actual Ouya people aren't reputable with the things that they do. Android in and of itself isn't so great for home gaming the way Ouya does it. Its like people are just porting over whatever games they have on their tablets and throwing it on the console which makes the games really buggy and the controls suck. The hardware in and of itself is rather faulty too while we're at it.

If you truly want to go the Indie route for Android I would suggest Mad Catz's new console Mojo. If you want something thats going to be an Indie equivalent to the PS4 and XBox One I would go with Migen Gamebox which is one of the varieties of Steambox. I actually talk to the guy Josh Baker who is making this. He is a good guy and knows what he's doing. I plan to actually get one once his Kickstarter goes up. Though he says he is having three models. A Barebones Model, A Linux Model and a Windows Model. I will probably wind up with the Linux Model.

Mobile gaming can't replace home gaming for me. A big part of this is that I find the ergonomics of handhelds to be extremely poor- my hands end up hurting after playing them for about 30 minutes (this primarily applies to handhelds produced after the Game Boy Advance, which I found to have a pleasant shape and a solid feel). Phones and tablets have even worse ergonomic qualities. On top of this, I don't go a whole lot of places, and when i do, I'm usually driving myself. I'd rather sit back in my chair and enjoy a game than hold something at its one workable viewing angle. Mobile isn't for me.

Also, the reason now that the vita makes mobile gaming so easy is that the standby functionality of it rules. I take it with me at work and plug away on my campaigns on my breaks. I'll admit I eve take it in the bathroom with me. And you can I bring it with me every time we go to visit the in-laws.

I never get time for playing games anymore. So every little 15 minute break I get is where I find time to squeeze them in. Now with the vita working as a satellite to the ps4 you can bet I'll be playing my ps4 games on my vita!

I only wish I would have bought a 3G vita.

I haven't held the Vita, primarily because the dearth of interesting titles made me not even consider it.

The 3DS is for sure uncomfortable. But the vita? If you thought the gameboy advance was comfortable I'm wondering if you've ever held a vita?

I've played with a 3DS yesterday and I felt its comfortable to play Project X Zone.
