Castlevania to be temporarily turned off?

The results of the video game department from Konami dropped to 11,7 bilions yens, down from 21,2 yens last year. The year was positive for Konami, yet, who said Metal Gear 5 had solid sales. But Los2 results were not commented.

Castlevanai is a good license that suffers from being not really mainstream, but not totally undergound either. I have the feeling that Konami could decide to temporarily stop making Castlevania games.

Some state this is the consequence of making "Western appealing" Castlevania games. Others state they had the feeling they played a downgraded verson of Dark Siders 2.

So is it likely that Castlevania will be forgotten for a few years? I have for it the same feeling i once got for Silent Hill, first being dissapointed to see the series had changed so much, then starting to not belive anymore in the future of the ip.

We have members in here who claim that LoS2 was a commercial success. They can't show any numbers but they claim that anything VGchartz says is false. But make no mistake, their own "source" is completely reliable.

Just..... LOL.

On topic: I don't know what Castlevania is anymore. I don't know what I'm supposed to look forward to. The series has no identity. It just wants to be "popular" and "AAA". It's as hollow as Drac's soul. I'll keep an eye on the franchise to see what happens but I wouldn't be surprised if we won't hear from it again in at least 3 years.

It's possible. I mean the Mega Man franchise has been mostly in that vein for quite some time now, and you already mentioned Silent Hill (though, personally 1-3 will be enough to keep me satisfied with the series for a good long time). But hey, look on the bright side. Even in the worst-case scenario, Castlevania going into official hiatus, there's always that spark of fan projects that lights up when these kinds of things happen.

Of course, sometimes that goes horribly, horribly wrong for all the right reaons. Just look at Mega Man Unlimited. *shudders*

Don't forget IGA's future original Metroidvania, whenever he gets around to starting it.

It is kinda sad. Even though the LoS series wasn't my perferable take on CV, to see Konami not even comment about the series when they released the financial results.... ouch!

Cox said it did well. his word, no matter how dubious, trumps VG Chartz, who openly admit to making up numbers by educated guesswork.

Nobody says it did better than LoS1 either.

At best, the series will be regulated to handheld/downloadable status just like it was years ago. Worse case scenerio, a cheap iOS and/or browser game future just like all the rest of Konami's IP's not named Metal Gear and PES.

As far as a big console release's are concerned, I think that's over unless they find another C tier developer.

Amen, crisis!

I long suspect that the franchise will go that way.
Oh and by the way, LOS2 was not yet released in Japan.

Castlevania to be temporarily turned off by Konami? Wouldn't shock me too terribly. Would go hand in hand with the main CV Dungeon website that hasn't been updated in almost 2 years.

I don't know. Those dwindling results might also be motivation to actually do something again with their old IPs. They will probably exploit them anyway on iOS, etc.

Regarding pachislots, there has been a rumour going on for a while a Castlevania pachinko is coming out, together with pachislots for Metal Gear and Silent Hill, lol.

I'd rather they stop making Castlevania games if they are going to be LoS crap.  Give us a side scrolling 3DS or Vita game along the lines of DXC or SoTN.  Castlevania never needed to be 3D, this is not MGS.

MAybe we'll see a new Contra before anything CV related. I sincerely believe Konami is proud of their old IPs but they just have no clue what to do with them anymore. I bet they look at their old franchises thinking that they wanna do something with them some day. I think the likes of Suikoden, Gradius and Goemon are pretty fucked, at least the first one, but I do think Contra could be up for discussion, even if it's not gonna be handled by Cox.

I just want a new Suikoden, really. Castlevania can rest for a while until a new developer steps up and makes a sidescroller, or possibly a 3D game inspired by Dark Souls rather than God of War. The pace, the combat and the level design in Dark Souls is a much better fit for Castlevania than God of War or Devil May Cry ever was. At least in my opinion...

I think CV just needs to return to it's classic hardcore roots. No metriodvania, no LOS. Just a simple, bad ass straight forward action game.

In a world where angry birds and flappy birds are massive hits, it's safe to say that there is a very strong market for simple, challenging games.

But regardless of what Konami does, Castlevania will always stay alive by fans like us.

'Count' *Chuckle* me in on this too. It was the classic horror theme that got the series it's first start and I truly believe that's where it should return to. Whenever a game series abandons it's roots it's no-longer that same series we know.
