Inafune really is showing that he's just a business man instead of a programmer/producer....and not a very good one it seems.
Releases a new campaign while Mighty No.9 is being delayed...they decides that, before the new campaign is even finished, that they will allow a Chinese company to publish the game so now all KS funding will be for "stretch goals" instead.
Shitty planning and shitty communication. I'm glad I missed the boat on MN9.
Well, in business terms for the gaming industry it does make sense to a degree. But he could have handled it better.
What I mean is, when a project is closing up you rarely need the artists, level designers, gameplay designers, musicians, etc. It's mostly all about tweaking the game and fixing bugs. They are still on your payroll however, so you need to make use of them somehow. They can head on to preproduction for the next game. That being REDASH in this case.
This is a normal process, and all well and good, until he tried to kickstart another preproduction before the first game was out. It worked for Mighty for a number of reasons, but the Kickstarter 'game' changes when your first donation based project hasn't left the house yet.
Really all they needed to do was make a prototype while Mighty was getting ready to ship, and then kickstart it a couple of weeks (presumably) after Mighty launched. Imagine if Mighty came out to rave reviews, and then they dropped a REDASH playable prototype in our laps? The streets would have been paved with gold for Comcept.
Most of the problems here I think is Inafune felt he already had the good faith, a little arrogant unfortunately, so he could just shit out another Kickstarter and no one would second guess it.
This all begs the question though, did Comcept not have money to wait or was Inafune just doing the normal route without thinking how it may effect people's perspective of REDASH? Was their 'well' really so dry they had no choice but to spit out a lackluster Kickstarter? Did you notice there was no visible management team this time? Bloodstained had a wonderful management team, the same one they had for Mighty. But why didn't REDASH have the same team?
After hearing about Comcept cancelling one of their other game projects (the one with animal pirates), it made me wonder if maybe the money train died because Mighty got delayed. They still have to pay the people working on Mighty when it gets delayed. It may have run so far over that they were in a money crisis. Hell, if this next delay for Mighty is true it may be because they had to cut staff to stay afloat. Less staff means longer development time, hence the delay. This is also very dependent on how Inticreates balances the financial weight of Mighty with Comcept. It is something we were never really told.
All speculation of course, but it makes you think...
As for REDASH now being published by some no-name Chinese company... I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. Some part of me is just glad REDASH did not fail despite the massive fuck up it became on Kickstarter.
