I just hoped Konami would have the decency not to do this to the last game of its console era. MGS5 is getting glowering reviews, and I'll be buying it this week, but there's nothing like knowing that I'll have the option to spend $80 online on top of a $60 game...

So can we use this thread to talk about how awful Phantom Pain's writing is?

Go for it, I say. I've watched a few reviews of this and that "demo" they released and it all looks pretty much like they did everything I would have done to make this game as generic as possible while removing almost everything that made Metal Gear unique.
I've never been much of a fan of the newer games in the series, but I can see how this particular iteration might rub fans the wrong way.
Looking at how far Kojima took his Metal Gear game in the direction of Splinter Cell makes me wonder if all of the changes were pushed by the execs and if Silent Hills would have gotten the same treatment.

Even if it is a screwed-up mess of a story I'll play the game and see how it is. I've come to expect this kind of thing out of Kojima's writing. It's almost as if he's saying "you'd better stop requesting more MGS games cause they're only going to get all the more strange from here-on out."

Konami puts out a game with damn near perfect critic reviews and still you guys gotta rip the shit out of it.

And what does it matter what the critics have to say on it?
They are still just giving out their personal opinions which are no more or less valid than those f anyone else.
This is no different than when some long-time fans disliked Lords of Shadow because of the changes made there.
Hell, it's no different than the time people complained about SotN.
When an established series gets a sequel that makes significant changes to the core features that made it popular in the first place there will always be people who don't like it and they will be vocal about it.
Regardless of critical praise there are things that were done that pissed people off and they can discuss, bitch, moan, and complain all they want.
I would say that negative feedback is more important and significant in the long run because it helps developers identify what they did wrong, but I doubt there will even be another console Metal Gear game any time soon.
Oh, and...

Chances are most of those critics never even played the game, and if they did they did not get very far into it. IMHO, those who have played the game from beginning to end have the more honest critiques then the official critics ever will. I have to agree with Inccubus on this one. Today I'll be picking up my copy and see the game for myself then I can decide for myself whether or not it is good, mediocre or bad.

Yeah, I don't really trust the critics on this one, either. Look at the scores for MGS4...that one was overhyped, too. Not a bad game, but definitely not near-perfect, as the review scores would have you believe.
It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, but instead it's Who Wants Fried Chicken? I do.

Since Im fleeing from spoilers (Super Waffle, using a spoiler tag in that post could be a better idea) I don't have much to add. But this was well known since like 4 months or more I think. Yeah, I also dislike it and they did something similiar in Resident Evil Revelations 2 online mode.

Sadly this is becoming a unwanted trend.

Until recently, a lot of people believed that their premium currency could also be acquired in-game - Konami reps were even quoted as saying that in a major news outlet. They did a 180 on Twitter a few days ago, but the damage was done.

Besides, I'm more concerned about its Konami's general gaming philosophy than about its transparency. Had MGS5 offered content-filled DLC, people like me would've bought them in no time at all. But instead they chose to implement a woefully overpriced system that's very reminiscent of mobile microtransactions; it makes it look like Konami executives just couldn't resist throwing their new business dogma into what's probably one of the company's last console games.

It's really this lack of respect that's been bothering me, even if I know that the "old Konami" is gone and not coming back. Years from now, I'll probably keep stumbling on the distorted head of Alucard in some crappy cash-grabbing mobile game, and it will irritate me, no matter how little I care about the company.

In essence, I just wish Konami would leave its old, respected franchises alone. I wouldn't even mind if they sold off their intellectual property for millions of their coveted dollars - we might at least get a new, decent publisher in charge. I know it's wishful thinking, but one can still dream...
