Konami has ceased all triple-A console game production on everything but Pro Evolution Soccer and there are currently no plans for a big new Metal Gear game, while worldwide technology director Julien Merceron has left the company. That's according to a pair of reports on French site Gameblog. Eurogamer understands both reports to be true.

Problems at Konami were highlighted earlier in the year when Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima left the company and his Kojima Productions studio was dissolved. He had reportedly fallen out with Konami's big bosses who refused to bankroll his long and lavish productions any longer. Metal Gear Solid 5 reportedly cost $80m to make. Any new Metal Gear Solid game Konami produces will presumably be made without Kojima involved.

Further problems at Konami were highlighted when respected financial Japanese newspaper Nikkei ran an article about a deteriorating company culture at Konami's game division. Employees "deemed useless" were apparently given menial and degrading tasks, and communication with outsiders was restricted and lunch breaks monitored.

What comes next for Konami, and for Kojima, we'll have to wait and see.

This seems to be the way a lot of the Japanese companies are going sadly, so I'm not surprised at this outcome. I wonder if we'll be getting any mobile CV games.

And I'd really like if Konami didn't even THINK about issuing a cease and desist to any of the fans creating fangames. They should be happy people are still giving damn about Castlevania at all, because if it depended on them, it'd be deader than Dracula after 1999.

That's when we simply tell them to get up off their broken @$$'s and make the damned games themselves rather then worrying about how the fanbase is actually doing it better, and doing it right.

We can finally give it some closure. Perhaps in a decade or two, someone will unearth the IP and give us a new Castlevania in whatever plane of existence we exist by then.

You pretty much got the greenlight to do the1999 game at this point. Don't think Konami gives enough of a shit about the series to send out a C&D.

I'm totally with you on this one, but I don't know if I'm so optimistic. For example, remember when Konami issued a copyright complaint on Metal Gear Solid V fan art? I'll be honest, I've never heard of a company doing that before. Sometimes it seems almost as if they're actively going out of their way to bully their own community.

At this moment in time I cannot trust what Konami says. They're a corporation and will make up excuses in order to save face. Or what's left of their face. Actions speak louder then words, and the only way to convince me they are telling the truth about what they say, is to make another console game.

Yep. Ball's in Konami's court now. It is a bit unsettling that they haven't directly addressed the rumor. I think the longer it goes without them making a statement of some kind, the worse the situation will likely turn out to be.

Did you look at the screen of the email Konami sent that person who asked in the support ticket? It says right there that they already acknowledged this rumor back in May, why would they need to reply to it again? They cant let the "media" control them by forcing them to reply every time someone starts a rumor.
