none of them.  i like my Castlevania games the way the designers intended them.  there's plenty of 2D games to play if you want to play a 2D game.  we've never had two 3D games back to back without a 2D game in between (not counting C64 and LoD as two separate games for this statement to be true).

i'd probably most want to see a 2D version of Curse of Darkness, since we haven't seen a 2D game that "really" emphasized familiars to that degree yet.

Curse of Darkness was great, I would love to see both a 2D demake similar to Final Fight or Streets of Rage or a 3D remake more like Devil may Cry, better combo depth but with better mapping.

When you say similar to ff or SOR do you mean literally being able to move up and down the screen?

You know, a Final Fight style beat 'em up would actually be a pretty good 2D representation of CoD's game play.

Yes

There are select homebrew CV games I have seen with this.. How about 32 way multi-directional whipping a la SCIV.. Would need a joystick that's twist able like midnight resistance

Oh boy... that's going to be disorienting and confusing for me if it's done with an SoR view.

Have you ever tried Castlevania Nightmare??

It's just stages from Simon's Quest extruded in 3D, pixels and all with a 3rd dimension. Cool idea, needless to say that views get very confusing where there are stairs involved.
Even Simon in his red tunic fully extruded in 3D looks creepy af..

Judgment -> Serio's game

Or just a good Street Fighter like game.

I voted for Judgment and agree with this.

I started LoI on crazy on Monday. It might be better with 2D gameplay but the environments imo are absolutely stunning. I just finished House of Sacred Remains and I was getting into the very Gothic look and feel. The weird pictures of who knows what, the chapels, the eerie hallways, and of course the music helped. I don't know if 2D could pull that off for me. I'm not saying they couldn't but to me LoI is what a CV game should feel like (in terms of environment). Don't get me wrong I can see where some might think it's a little flat and repetitive but I love the atmosphere the game has to it.

LOI needed more vertical platforming elements/ visual windows to the outside world which was eternal night.
A few more varieties enemies like Medusa heads etc and it would've been fine.

I felt both LOI and COD lacked in enemy variety.

I do agree that the game needed more vertical segments (and medusa heads... might as well add the bats in).  Even CV64 had medusa heads, so maybe they could've just have them act similarly in LoI.

Just google I suppose. I've done a quick one and it doesn't seem to be a common download anymore. It was out around the same time as the homebrew "Castlevania Quest" which was a linear version of SQ divided into 4 stages, that was actually pretty good. That would've been around 2005.

EDIT:
Holy Fuck, I found a video of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v708uxRXjzw
My bad it was called Castlevania Quest HORROR

Yeah I can get behind this. I hadn't really notice the lack of enemy variety but you make a valid point. Things like Medusa heads would be nice. And I have noticed the game has lots of skeletons and zombies

Things like Medusa heads would be nice.

My biggest gripe with 3Dvania is aside from the 64 titles in some segments of the game, the other 2 titles did not have the balls to implement a necessity for air attacks. Since COD is a hack and slash with barely any platforming we can disregard it, but LOI's Belmont had a whip, and having no succinct jump+whip mechanic which was such an important part of 2dvania, just sucks anus.

And I have noticed the game has lots of skeletons and zombies
White Skeleton, Green Skeleton, Blood Skeleton, Gold Skeleton, all with the same unblockable attacks.. Seriously it's boring as bat shit. Even the bats' shit is less boring. At least COD was the first 3D game to implement Rippers/ Fleamen as well as Cockatrice and a few more random off-the-cuff enemies (like gaibon). At least in the Wyvern battle you could jump onto its back and it became a different mechanic altogether. At least in the N64 titles when you fight that Giant Bull after setting the TNT/breaking the magic seal if you're playing as Reinhardt it makes it easier to jump+whip. Same goes for the Vampires you fight along the way.

Sorry, rant over. LOI is just lacking some critical mechanics imo, even though the gameplay works. The atmosphere music etc is great also. LOI did have The Forgotten One, now that was a memorable battle imo.

Imagine Castlevania Judgement, done in the style of Darkstalkers.

You may weep for what might have been, now.
