Topic: Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. Deluxe?

I've never actually beaten the original Super Mario Bros. and I was looking to do just that. I'm looking to buy it on 3DS through the Virtual Console, so I'm wondering if I should buy the original game, or the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe version.

The original itself is still pretty solid outside of the uncontrollable jumps and the lack of backwards screen crawling, but I heard that the Deluxe version adds some collectibles challenges (Red Coins and whatnot) and includes The Lost Levels as a "Super Mode", though the screen is really zoomed in due to the Game Boy's smaller screen. Which would be better to grab, or do they stand up enough on their own to go for both?

Get the original.  You really can't improve on the classics.

It's been a while ever since I've played either version.  From what I've heard, the Lost Levels included in Super Mario Bros Deluxe is missing World 9 as well as the other extra worlds (also Luigi in the original Lost Levels can jump higher and has lower traction).  Also, that screen crunch.  Although that version does have saving (although that's kinda pointless if you use the Wii U VC/3DS VC's save states), and it has some additional stuff (some which involves the GameBoy Printer).  If the extra modes seem attractive, then get the Deluxe version.  Otherwise just get the originals (especially since they aren't screen crunched).

I grew up with a Game Boy (no home consoles for me until the PS2 as my parents didn't trust them), so Deluxe has many cherished memories for me.

I remember almost beating it on the busride to school one time. The closer-view was something I had to get used to, but as a SMB and SMB2/Lost Levels compilation, it's a great package

I'm sure there's a Mario All-Stars Ltd edition for Wii. (yes the original Wii)
They go for around 110 AUD on ebay from what I've seen.

As much as I like the original SMB, the All-Stars version of that and Lost Levels (which include a graphical update and a couple of extra tracks) is the definitive edition for me.

Added to this SMB1-3 has graphical updates (as well as the original MB) so you really can't lose.

I really don't like the graphics of the All-Stars versions. I've always found them to be really ugly. That being said, I stated I was looking to grab it on the 3DS Virtual Console, and only the NES and GBC versions are available on said platform.




That being said, as far as the screen cramping goes, on YouTube it doesn't look TOO bad. The extras sound enticing, even just the ability to play as Luigi in both games (I've always preferred using the Lean Green Mean Machine), even if he doesn't jump high or have low traction. But there's other things, like I can see how the screen cramping could definitely lead to some unwarranted deaths, plus the higher price tag.

I kinda like the overworld map aesthetically, but I can live without that.

Recently played all stars for SNES and it's great! Haven't played the wii version yet, good thing wii u is BC

I hear that the wii version is just all-stars repackaged so you're not missing much. And that overall for a anniversary package it was dissapointing. The kirby collection and even dragon quest collection is more impressive that the wii all-stars pack.

The DX version has a super cool map screen and I think the colors are a little more vivid, but the lower screen resolution and field of view really makes the game impossible to play. Either play it on NES or the All-Stars version.

Goin' off things, I ultimately decided to go with the NES version. The greater field of view really helps, after all. And against my original intentions, I also decided to grab it on Wii U for that multiplayer option. I might grab the Deluxe version later on down the line though.
