I've been replaying this game for the past day. What does everybody think of it now?
I'd say this game has the most refined combat of the latter-day 2D Castlevania games. Every encounter feels 'important', not something you can just blindly hack your way through. The game has some of the best looking and detailed enemies. I remember one Igarashi interview where he said the team had some programming tool to give enemies and backgrounds much more detail, and it shows.
I found it interesting how more somber the music is compared to PoR's more upbeat, arcade-y style. OoE definitely has the best boss themes among the series, and one of the best Dracula fights. I know CotM's producer was on OoE's team, which makes me wonder how much input he had in regards to some of the levels and boss fights. I know the "training area" seemed like something from CotM, and it was refreshingly difficult. Too bad it was just a bonus area rather than incorporated as part of the game.
Also, Masaki should have been the series' main artist after this title. I liked some of LoS' artwork, but I think OoE had the best of the two.
Ecclesia's hard mode is excellent as well, in how the levels have new enemies and traps rather than just have the enemies give stupid amounts of damage.
The only thing I don't like is the flatness of some of the outdoor areas, like the forest. They make more 'sense' in hard mode, where you have to use precise jumping to get through the streams of winged skeletons amongst other obstacles, but in normal mode they're just too flat.
-
Ko-G worked on the menu and some background work iirc. I think it kinda shows, especially in the Clock Tower parts. I'm not sure what role is assigned level design though.
I liked the enemy placement too, but the level design just relies too much on it at times, like on Ruvas Forest like you said. There weren't really many layouts that grabbed me by the balls. Order of Ecclesia just seems to dance along extremes in regards to layouts. I like that it knew it had an action emphasis and didn't try to detract with that, becoming muddled like Portrait of Ruin. It could have been pushed that even more though, especially since the outside levels were all detached from one another.
-
I would have loved to take on OoE with a whip character, even as an extra. That and the sometimes flat areas, really are my only gripe.
It's definitely one of the best, and I place it as a second to SotN.
-
OoE had some of the best bosses of the DS trilogy. I wish the smaller areas incorporated "instant death" hazards, such as spikes & bottomless pits (but the noobs woulda complained even more). A whip glyph would've definately been cool. I love how we still don't know what exact year the game takes place in. The art style is perfect & the general tone is superb. I wonder why there wasn't any Morris character though??
I also love the entrance to Dracula's Castle; first time I seen the organic-like design I was like "here we go, this is what i've been waiting for!"

I have the Konamistyle limited edition, the preview posters, phonecards, etc. I have this game & all its assets on lock. I like digging between my couch coushins to find a Shanoa phonecard that I've misplaced. I wonder why Konami didn't deem it successful enough to give IGA the greenlight to start another trilogy for the 3DS.

It isn't really set in stone that there won't be one, though, is it?

I didn't play OoE until this year, but I've played through it 4 times on different modes.
I thought OoE was a great game, with probably the best story idea in the series. The story alone would make a great movie, and when I say 'alone' I mean without tying it to CV. I'm not someone who really cares about story, but I know a good one when I see it.
As far as gameplay goes, many of the areas were either too small or lazy in design, or both. The glyph system was great, but it all got dumped on the player in random chunks, so it was easy to feel overwhelmed by it at times. It would have been better if they had been more strategic about when you got certain glyphs, the easiest way being requiring the player to acquire and use a glyph in order to advance through the next part of the game. They only did that with those silly cerberus glyphs. Instead, experimenting with the glyphs is basically optional, and learning about their elemental properties and attributes is never required, and use of glyph unions is only required once IIRC. The use of the magnetized blades with magnes was awesome, but again not required so the player could play the game over and over without even knowing about it.
Those little gripes aside, I think it's probably my fav CV game for the DS.
-
Call me weird I guess but I didn't really like OoE. Don't get me wrong I played it and beat it but I just thought it would be more. I thought it would be more like Simon's Quest. For instance instead of one town it would have a few towns or, instead of just being able to touch an area on the bottom screen you would have to travel there. So, I guess a lot of backtracking. I also felt it was too much like the Sorrow games but with a girl. I enjoyed Albus mode more than the main mode. The bosses were fun and the difficulty was just right though. I wish that one of the Glyphs was a whip though.
It was alright but I thought it could be better.
-
Does anyone have any OoE phonecards they wanna sell me?
-
Yes. There really should have been a whip glyph. Actually, there should have been three (a leather whip, a chain whip, and a longer chain whip) just like the classic games that had three forms of the whip. I wonder what attribute such glyphs would fall under.
-
I'm glad there wasn't a whip glyph. I really think they were trying to use some fresh ideas, and a whip is about as stale as you can get. If there had been a whip glyph, then there would have been a ton of people who just used nothing but that as soon they got it, ignoring everything else. Kind of like how some people just use jonathan and ignore charlotte. I think they are just trying to keep the series evolving because the moment a title is released that feels too stale, people begin declaring the franchise dead. That may not be true with the more devoted fans, but I think it is painfully true for the larger portion of gamers.
-
I think OoE is a wonderful change of pace.
The glyph unions almost seem too powerful. Even in lvl 1 hard mode, I can defeat bosses within moments with the right setup.
That laser glyph + a blade glyph makes a massive holy sword thing that can take down Dracula without any difficulty.
If you boost your element attributes enough, you can deal even more ridiculous amount of damage. It's insane.

Whips never get old. However, you're right. If they made a whip glyph I would only use that one. You're also right I only used Jonathan with the Vampire Killer. I also use Belmonts in HoDe and Judgment most of the time.
So, I see your point but I just like using whips.

What if was severely underpowered like the whip sword in AoS?

I'd totally hit that! I really wish they implemented a whip glyph, after all they're using every other weapon type so when not?

Damn straight!

Love the game, but 1 fatal flaw, Bosses aren't legitimately hard.
Just because their health and damage are jacked up doesn't make it hard, it just preys on your boredom to spend almost 10 mins on a stupid crab boss, this is common with all the bosses.
Bosses should have been a real challenge instead of 10-20 mins of pattern dodging occasionally doing damage.
The only boss that made me think was the wall traveler, that was cool.
then again, this game would be better off without the level-up system and only rely on weapon upgrades and such.
-

Yes. This is my major complaint with every metroidvania including SotN. The level-up system makes the games way too easy. Can't get through a part, just grind for a few hours. Games shouldn't work that way. It should be a contest of skill not patience.
For all the flack LoI got, the one thing it did right is that it didn't have the level-up system. It just had hp, mp, and heart max ups as well as different armors and a few different weapons. The fact was that there was no grinding and when you actually beat an area, it felt like an actual accomplishment because it took real skill to beat it. There was no way that you could become overpowered and there weren't any broken weapons to make use of. This is what these games should be like.
LoS did something similar and that worked. It was a real challenge to beat even on the easiest difficulty setting. Say what you will about the stories, but the game play is what needs to be present in most of, if not all, the games.
-

Id be down for that.
-

Yes, they are.
I never had a problem with any metroidvanias bosses (besides the first time I've fought Galamoth in SOTN and that two-headed dragon in COTM). And if you wanted to get the medals... goddammit, that shit was almost impossible. The only "lame" boss (aka, easy) in this game is the first one.
-
Getting the medals was very easy if you were powered up enough.
-

Meaning hours of grinding......not that i am against the level up system, but it should be more balanced, something like the Dragon Quest games or if you don't wan at all a level up system, something like Vagrant Story, i think would be best, having to find items to increase your stats and upgradable weapons/armors the way Vagrant Story did!!!
-
I don't think I spent more than 45 mins grinding in that game. There are a couple of places which really give you a buttload of points really fast.

I know what you mean, but to get up to lv255, you need some hours......i have made it up to lv234.
-
I didn't even know that they went that high. I think I got to about lvl 69 and I was pretty much untouchable.
-
I didn't need to grind in OoE at all in the entire game. Proper equipment sets and skill got me through it. Bosses might seem hard at first but once you got their pattern down they fall quick.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would you need to grind when getting the medals means beating the boss without getting hit? Getting the medals meant you fought the boss a few times, reset, and when confident that you learned their pattern, went for the medal with no damage. I agree with the other posters, I barely did any grinding in this game.

Lv255, was unlockable as a bonus, for defeating lv1 cap mode.

You speaking on your first run through it or after you have beat it and played it again? Just curious!!!

I didn't grinding for the medals, i only did it for me, to see how much power you can obtain with a lv255.
-
The light/dark glyph union was powerful enough on my lvl 50 cap playthrough to take out almost every boss before they even had a chance to come at me. The crab and a couple of the bosses late in the game were harder to get medals for, but most of them just fell before they even had a chance.
-
Crab medal was difficult to obtain, because no matter how much damage you were inflicting, you couldn't kill it. The only way to die was to activate the elevator, but to do that, you had to climb the light house, while you had to fight it and avoid it's attacks.....something that sucks....... :P

This battle pisses me off when I'm doing a boss rush game. >:(
-
I never grind in metroidvanias (well, I made an exception for circle of the moon), I find it makes the game a bit tougher and more fun.
-

First, of course.

Same here. I died a lot(which was actually quite refreshing), but I never felt like I NEEDED to grind to pass a boss. I just kept moving forward, only going back to find those damn villagers, and to do their quests(which were actually kind of fun). I'm actually replaying the game for maybe the fifth time now since it was released. It's still a lot of fun and a good challenge. The medals challenge makes boss fights hard even after you've figured them out.
-
First, of course.
That's cool!!! :)
When i'm playing a new Castlevania game, i'm rushing through it and don't bother to grind or collect items. I'm leaving these stuffs for the end of the game or when i have finish it first. If i find the last boss very hard to beat, then i'll grind some levels to be able to beat it.
-
The only reason I grinded through the game was to obtain all the glyphs. That and getting the minerals i needed for beter equipment. As for getting all the medals? That stupid crab fight always ruins it. I'd be much better if you could rocket your way up to the top of the lighthouse as soon as the fight starts, and give the elevator squish to the crab as he's still miles down below you.
-
Too much moaning about Brachyura in here. His pattern isn't difficult to discern, and the concept is novel and fun to contend with. Even Magnes is put to good use during the battle. Also, that finish.
Generally, this game has the best bosses of any post-Symphony Castlevania, maybe even Castlevania as a whole. Inflated health pools don't ever factor in if you're taking advantage of the enemies' weaknesses, like the game has taught you to do in the first place.
-
Bro Fist @ Gecko, Puwexil
It's all harkening back to the classic concept of gaining skill as a player, not as a number set. The game gives you what you need to survive, and teaches you the basic in which to do so.
When I got romped on in OoE for doing the same shit I passed through the rest of them with, then I knew this game was a keeper. A smile not seen in a long time returned to my face. It made me the player learn and grow, instead of grind EXP until the retarded attack pattern I did worked out on the boss anyway since I was just now invincible. Hell most of the post SotN games didn't even need skill to beat the bosses. You get so OP early on anyway you can just mash attack and win usually. That makes a player like me get lazy and unskilled.
OoE kicked me in the ass, and I love it for doing so.
-
OoE kicked me in the ass, and I love it for doing so.
YES. It's my favorite of the Metroidvanias, as it's the first to (sorta) change up the formula since SotN, not to mention it's actually hard.
Also it's even more fulfilling than SotN if you just want to buzzsaw the fuck through bosses, thanks to Death Rings and Nitesco + sword glyph unions.
-

This is the main reason I haven't finished it. Everything just takes so long to kill. Its rarely that hard from what I have played, but tedious. Compare it to the classics, where everything can kill you quickly but most monsters also die fast. OoE is too slowly paced in my opinion. Its does some unique things and has some cool ideas, but I have never really felt the urge to buckle down and finish it.

That's because you're doing something wrong. The game needs to be played hard (aka, use the gliphs right, switching them is fundamental on this game). Best combat system for any metroidvania IMO.
-
I confess that the first time I played OoE, I quit after a couple of hours and decided I didn't like it. Later on I decided to try it again and I started a new game. This time I put more effort into understanding the glyph system and I really enjoyed it from then on. It is definitely different, and I guess the first time I played it I just wasn't in the mood for something that new. Once I really began to understand it better I found that it really works quite well and I hope to see more CV games like it.

not gonna happen, Dave Cox & his MercurySteam control CV now :D
btw am still looking for Oldel of Ecclesia phone cards, PM me if anyone is selling any ;D

I disagree, PoR did bosses better, it required skill but didn't draw the battles out to where you no.1 cause of death is boredom or you screwing up like once or twice after 10 mins of battle.
OoE did do normal enemies much better than any maetroidvania though.
-
I found the PoR bosses to be HP tanks too, except a lot of their attack patterns were a lot duller than OoE's.

A few bosses in OoE have insane attacks. Like when Galioth jumps up, and slams his fist into the ground. Totally caught me off guard the first time I played it. Or the water bosses' tsunami attack.
Or what about Dracula's crazy instant game over causing explosion if you didn't use dominus quick enough?
I also liked Brauner's attacks.
PoR is just boring in comparison when it comes to bosses.

Really? Because this was exactly my experience in PoR (in a Hard Mode Lv. 1 from scratch game).

I disagree, if the bosses on OoE didn't have that much HP, with the speed Shanoa is attacking, you would have them dead in a minute.....instead with the HP which they had, they were able to execute a number of attacks, catching you off guard, thus making the battles last longer and more challenging!!!
I found the PoR bosses to be HP tanks too, except a lot of their attack patterns were a lot duller than OoE's.
I agree!!! Each boss was having a large number of attacks, that they have catch me by surprise!!! It was the first time, after Circle of The Moon and Aria of Sorrow that i have felt that excitement, about a new Castlevania game. OoE was on the right direction, having some flaws, but if there was going to come a new one, i want to believe that it would have been far greater and challenging than OoE was!!!
-

The hell, PoR bosses are easy as pie. Never had any problems with them, at all.
-
Then notion that PoR bosses were better than OoE is ludicrous. PoR bosses just stood still most of the time and took a beating within seconds.
The only PoR boss I liked over the OoE counter part was Death. I love that instant kill and circle that keeps the scythe in bounds and bouncing.
-
The only PoR boss that gave me trouble was Frankenstein's Creature. Even Death & Drac were not too terrible.
-
Well, about halfway through and I can't understand why some people think this is the best Metroidvania ever. The art is nice, though. I'd like the artist hired again.
Sure has a lot of Les-Yay; seems that almost all other female characters want Shanoa (can't say I blame them, though) ;D

Well, it has an interesting battle system, less recycled sprites, great soundtrack, nice designs and the best of all, high difficulty, until you get to memorize all attack paterns of the bosses!!!

Different opinions, I guess. I think AoS is still the best, though OoE is a strong second.

SotN > OoE > AoS
Best Three
IMO ;D

It really didn't bother me how there wasn't a whip --what did bother me was the randomness of the treasure chests. As if grinding for rare drops wasn't enough --now these stupid chests had me grinding entire stages for treasures that may or may not even be there. At least in Harmony of Despair that kind of a system made a *little* more sense...
-
Not entirely random, from what I've noticed.
I just beat Albus. At the first try I was like, "This dude is fucking OP!" But then I was like, "It's-a me, Mario!" and dropped his ass so hard. I thought the wind glyph was great on him at first, but then I used Vol Umbra and dude dropped like a rock, barely ever hitting me. Took me a few tries cuz I was always just dicking around, but I figured out his pattern after the 2nd attempt. Only times he gave me issues were when I did something stupid like stand try to kick straight down... and he'd kick straight back up. :-[
Anyway, back on chests. Treasure chests. The higher the stage, the better the chest drops. In the first mountains, I'd get Iron Ores. In the second mountains, I'd get Silver Ores. In the mansion I'd get Gold Ores. Cashmere Thread was easy enough (Formors), but I wasn't finding any in chests until the mansions.
I also noticed there seems to be a super chest typically in the same places. I don't know if it's a random flag or if it just picks one chest on the map and randomizes it. But just keep going in and out of the stage and you should eventually get a super chest, which has a better drop.
But I'm finding a lot of my drops more easily from enemies lately, so...
Lemme think, boss I hated...... I hated Goliath. But then I equipped Ignis and um... the ice one... and just spammed the crap out of them and he fell pretty fast. But the bastard killed me so many times before that. I hated the crab, but it wasn't cuz the crab was hard, I just kept missing the platforms. Rusalka took me a while to figure out that I was supposed to stand UNDER the rocks. Gravedorcus pissed me off at first, but then I figured out to just stand on one of the ledges he makes until he tries to come at me from behind, then pummel his ass. ... Problem was I kept forgetting to get out of the way of his tail when I did that and there were so many sprites on the screen that I couldn't see me taking massive damage because i was standing right on top of him.
And yes, I beat Albus before finding all the villagers. >_> Fuckin' kidding me.... (got them now, btw. was missing the mom)
-
For each 1 point of luck, you get a 0,5% boost to enemies drops and glyph drops. Also, each normal chest on stages, has a 10% to become a rare green chest, every time you visit a stage. You can raise that percentage, by increasing your luck, for 0,5% for every 1 point of luck, to a max out 40% for the chests!!!
-

this is why a 99999 Luck run is the most enjoyable way to play OoE, Since (I think) there are no criticals, the grinding for glyphs/items is completely eliminated so you can focus on the game itself.
and trust me, it's worlds better than two hours on farming just for ONE mermaid meat.
-
OoE is my favorite of the DS Trilogy. The main reasons for this are the harder difficulty due to having to actually use strategy and learn attack patterns of enemies, and the dark atmosphere instead of the anime crap in the first two DS titles. I also like the soundtrack the best of the three games as well. Albus mode is the best extra mode in a CV game yet.
-
I think OoE is a game that has a 'perfect' sound track. It's the first castlevania where I simply loved every single little song, all the others had one or two or a few that I just didn't like.
Of course, this is my own opinion.
-

Yes, there are no criticals, but keep in mind that no matter how much luck you have, the % for chests will not go more than 40%. Only glyph and items drops will be affected.
-
Two hours for mermaid meat? Took me like... I dunno. I wasn't even looking for it. I was just killing Lorelais over and over the first time I found them and got it on like, the 23rd Lorelai or so.
NOOO! I was farming my Polkir up to level 2 for the last 30 minutes then I forgot what the doors with the red eyes on them meant! :'(
I like the catgirls. Werecat spell is fun! :D All the other werecats are my friends and I kill almost everything except bosses in just 2 or 3 hits, usually before they can respond.
If you play the game in Japanese, Shanoa says the same thing as Gourry Gabriev when she uses Luminato. The English version should have said, "Light come forth!" and it would have been perfect enough for me.

It was all good except the theme for the first area in the game, which is basically Yamane phoning it in.

You mean Blackmore? He is basically designed to rape you if you're not careful. I myself had to spam restoratives just to get past him. (And yes, I know that this is a cheap practice.) :P

You must be pretty damn stingy, cause how can you even run out? I remember having enough to beat Blackmore even on lvl 1 max cap.
I've done almost 2000 on Blackmore using the laser glyph + sword glyph combination. I forget what lvl I did that at.
The glyph combination attack breaks most bosses, to be honest. Find the right one, spam it, you'll win within seconds, regardless of what mode you play or what level you're at.
-
I remember when I first saw blackmore, I was like dang that's a cool boss.
-
Too bad Blackmore has horrible fashion sense,

Blackmore is probably one of the most interesting bosses in the entire series IMO...

Well, his sprite might not be the best, but the shadow fighting for him, is one great idea of a boss fight and a very cool design!!!
-
Too bad Blackmore has horrible fashion sense,

Reminds me of Von Karma.

Ugh OOE.... don't get me wrong its a GREAT game, but damn, does it have to be so hard?!
-
Well, it was meant to be a throwback to the classic games, so of course it's going to be hard...unless you use certain "tactics", that is. :P

Difficulty was what was missing through the last games and OoE came and gave it, but still it could get some improvements over that part and the design segment!!!

Is there any other way to get an Alexandrite aside from grinding the Large Cavern? Don't get me wrong, the Large Cavern's actually pretty easy if you know a certain tactic against the armors, it's just that it takes a long time and it gets tiring very fast. And this is the fifth pair of Minerva Greaves that I got! FIFTH! >:(
-
I don't think there is any other place to get it, but I'm puzzled as to why it's taking you so many attempts. I usually get it within three tries.

What.
It's official, the game hates me...-_-
-
Does it hate you, or is there a stat or ring involved which increases the odds? I don't really remember if LUCkKaffects chest contents, or if there is an item that does.
-
Loved the game, only thing that annoyed me was the idea of pressing one button then the other for faster attacks. Made it awkward for me. But very nice game, concept and though simple and predictable (as all cv are, nowadays), a nice story.

Awkward? I though it was awesome. Makes short work of most normal enimes.

Well, since Shanoa's luck stat will be irrelevant to my cursed luck anyway, will the treasure chest stop coughing out Minerva Greaves (or any one of the set) once I max them out in my inventory?
-
Alexandrite is a random drop, but if you have the rare ring, try equipping it and see if you'll have more luck!!!

That's so weird your luck is so bad. I got one of each item you can get from the chest one after another and was done with it. I never needed to grind for it.
I thought that the items you got from it was set. Never thought it was randomized. I assumed that you just got super potions after, or something.

Maybe I haven't given the Random Number God enough offerings. LOL
So I managed to get a Thief Ring recently, does it work on treasure chests as well?

It works for normal chests, since it increases the chances to make them rare(green) chests. Now for the chest you want, i don't know if it's affected though.............
