You shouldn't really take anything against how the older games play. The level design and enemy placement revolves around the character's limitations. If anything goes wrong, it's your fault, because that's exactly how the games work. If you memorize the levels, enemy placements, and boss patterns very well, you might not even get hit. It's pretty sad to see that the older games are much more strategic than the RPG-like games(are the hemorrhoidvanias even strategic? I'm pretty sure they were meant to be).
