Why does the camera move as if whoever is filming the scenes is on a boat?  Just curious b/c I have never seen that in a game before.  Not that it really makes a difference.

I've seen that only in very very few games... and I can't even think of their names off the top of my head.  The only game that I've seen do that is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem when you're low on sanity and it starts tilting the camera around (and that's not the same as this game's 'jitter-cam').

In some ways I feel like I wanna say "I told ya so!" toward those who say around chapter 4-5 the game kicks into high gear and starts really feeling like a 'Vania. I say that after reading the guide a week before the game was released, and I KNEW that was gonna be the case.

But that being said, that's also where I felt the influence of the early games coming into play. Sure with LoS the early chapters/levels may not feel very CV-ish, but you have to work your way up to it! This game keeps building upon itself! Give it a little time...trudge through the early levels and then soon you'll all see the big picture.

Indeed, though I felt it kicked into higher gears half way through the 2nd chapter.

Yep the game turned into Vania during chap 3, then the game went full blown Castlevania at chapter 5.

I starred at the castle in the background near the cliff for 3 minutes.

Hell, I'm only halfway through Chapter 2 and it feels like a 'Vania to me. Then again, I picked up on the CV2, CV3 and CV4 influence right off the bat so I'm willing to concede to a little unfamiliar/new look and feeling before going into full-blown 'Vania mode. But yea, this game definately captures the CV vibe as far as I can see, just maybe in a different way.

I have a question for those who have the game for the PS3, have you guys encountered any glitches?

I did, it happened at the abbey library.
When I was at the very last part of moving those light mirrors, I noticed some of the reflections turning on while it wasn't being reflected, so I waited there for about 20 min til I figured out it was a glitched and moved the light mirrors to where I thought they should be.

There are glitches I'm fairly certain are in both versions.. bosses getting stuck. I heard the 2nd chapter boss can get stuck. and the first vamp boss.

EDIT: The first vamp boss getting stuck I know for sure, cuz it happened to me.

There are two stories, depending on who you believe and what interview you read them in, as to how the initial design of the game came about: Either Mercury Steam and Konami started the game with the full intention of making it a castlevania, and were merely being coy by not originally identifying it as such when the first trailer debuted, or Mercury Steam set out to make a Castlevania, but weren't entirely sure they would get the greenlight from the powers that be on it, so they made the initial design generic enough it could stand as its own property if the studio got cold feet.

The way the early stages of the game play and feel, I'm inclined to believe the latter scenario. The first four chapters of the game notably lack a Castlevania feel. Some of the environs are too bright and mystical, the enemies, with few exceptions, are largely harry mammalian creatures-werewolves, wargs, and trolls, and the supporting cast are fantastic and seem regrettably superflous to the larger narrative.

Even the combat in these early levels feels different from what, mercifully, comes later on. The titan battles and the Malphas battle particularly use an annoying reliance on the quick time event to make it through. Later battles, though still requiring the QTE to finish the boss, don't use the technique as a requirement to simply engage the enemy.

Once the game hits chapter 5, however, it really feels like the point they got clearance to make the game a 'Vania. The backgrounds are suitably dark and detailed, the obligatory castle levels the best looking and designed of the 3D entries in the franchise, and the enemies start appearing more and more familiar, albeit with their own dark twists. The tedium of the original levels quickly wears off, and the perseverance of the player starts paying off in spades.

I think the original LoS website's wording seemed to suggest the latter scenario, as well. I recall it giving off a more "fantasy" vibe in wording and presentation that just happened to have vampires and werewolves as an element of it. (And think of the first promo sketches, too, and the teaser with just the giant ogre thing). It would be interesting to know the truth. Anyway, I think I will now be getting this game SOONER rather than later. :P

As an aside, it seems one of the recent reviews talks about the game's name being kind of silly, and the review gives off the impression that the "Castlevania" franchise was unknown to the reviewer. Interesting times.

I've seen two.

The first one is:  At the beginning of the game, if you press jump while you're falling after your first jump, you'll jump again once you land.  Try it on the PS3 version.  So basically you'll auto-jump upon landing, as if the game's got a late input buffer.

The second one, it was funny.  This one happens later.  It happens after you get the
(click to show/hide)
There are some spots where you're just not meant to jump to, and what ends up happening is, Gabriel ends up just levitating in the air.  Thankfully are allowed to jump out of it.

I was so looking foward to the LE but for £64.99 I don't think it's worth it for music I can find online and art I can find online.
I just wish I could have the mask  :(

Nevermind, I will be off to get my standard edition tomorrow then  ;D

I won't write a large review but some simple words :P
I'm at chapter 4, and, hell, this is my dream, just like that, a dream.. the visual style, the music, the narrative and the gameplay are not thrown there for the lulz, they merge sooo good to make this game, like CV has always been to me, a journey to the heart of Darkness. When you walk thourhg that lushful forest knowing things will not be that pretty later and you keep playing and you begin to see how the world against you is changing, little by little, and you're becoming more deadly, and the  usics is more bombastic and some misteripus characters are appearing showing a deeper layer to the narrative... this game is as good as any gothic tale has been told in videogames, and how it plays, god how it plays...

Everything comes full circle
