Then don't play this. You knew what this game was going to be like. There is a lot of over critical comments here. Ever since the DS games all I see fans do is hate. First it's too much of the same, now it's too different. Goldilocks meets Castlevania. It's really tough being part of a fanbase that craps all over itself. I'm loving the game and I'm leaving you, my dear freinds to your negativity and outrageous expectations. I am not trying to be rude or start something, but it seems unless you want to bash the game or point out every tiny flaw there is no point commenting. I would like to discuss the positives of the game which we all know outweigh the flaws greatly but I don't see that happening. Hell, I've seen some people here (like Jedi) on Gamefaqs making the same complaints. Oh well. Peace everyone.
Hey, you're jumping the gun. It's not like I'm totally against this game. In fact, I see myself purchasing it. I definitely see much-loved positives with the game, the biggest being the huge variety of areas outside of the main castle, the fact that there is a "whip"-wielding hero, and that you can use the whip for a number of tasks (including gap-swinging). Not to mention the levels are not composed of mostly endless hallways and there appears to be at least a taste of platforming.
However, and maybe I'm totally off the mark, but the base atmosphere of Castlevania, inspired by Gothic and/or Greco-Roman influences and Universal Studios' old-school horror-monster movies feels underplayed a great deal to say the least, opting more prevalently toward a more Lord of the Rings or Grimm's Fairytales aesthetic. I don't mind mixing, but I definitely want that base feel of older Castlevanias (ala SCVIV), as they defined the franchise, and there was nothing really wrong with that atmosphere as far as uniqueness, modern relevance, or potential to grow; rather, it was a matter of all-around execution.
Moreover, I am nervous that it may have borrowed more than it needed to from other games (as many games do these days), and that the fixed camera will hurt the level of jumping-based platforming in favor of lots of bogged-down wall-scaling/shimmying as seen from Drake's Fortune by way of Shadow of the Colossus.
And I guess after seeing great promise from the rough-around-the-edges N64 era, and pushing through the mixed bag of LoI and the downward spiral of CoD, I'm ready for a real home run of a 3D Castlevania game. I've built up a lot of expectations, and I really had hoped that I wouldn't have to constantly ask myself while I'm playing the game, "Am I playing Castlevania? Or a game somehow trying to make Castlevania popular by superfluously going off into left field?"
I'm not passing judgment, but I am both cautious and curious at this stage. I'm honestly not trying to spoil too much, because I do intend to play this game, but I am interested in the general thoughts of the board.
