Seemingly Mathias renamed himself directly after he fled, simply because(as IGA said) "Dracula" means "Son of the Devil"(which is the same as "Son of the Dragon", pulling from the Book of Revelations that the two are one in the same). It was a way of rebelling against God and shedding his holy name("Mathias" means "Gift from God").

Dracula means 'son of the Dragon'. The 'Devil' part is nothing more then christian propaganda. A dragon is an old symbol that predates christianity by many thousands of years. Since dragons are serpents they have more in common with the snake; the snake being the ancient symbol of fertility and creation. The asian dragons for instance look like giant serpants with small, short arms, legs and an extremly long coiled body. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Jesus talked about dragons in this way only to have the vatican omit it from the Bible because it didn't 'fit' with their own personal views. While only christianity views the devil and the dragon to be one and the same, every other ancient spritual belief world-wide (not counting other christian sects), claims otherwise.

Yes, but we cannot deny there are some Christian themes present in the CV series nonetheless, regardless of personal viewpoints and preferences. Christian symbols have "holy power" in the CV universe that harms evil. Various characters were fought for "God", and Mathias has devoted his live into spiting "God". In the end, it was IGA who said the reason Mathias changed his name was to be renamed "Son of the Devil", which makes all perfect sense. And in the end, if he(IGA) stated that was his intention, then so it is.

The whole saga is about god! xD Dracula, either version of him, is rebelled to/betrayed by God, the church is a big organization, Belmonts use chirstian imagery as weapons and Dracula has a chapel in every one of his castles... God is there man, it's somewhere plannin things in the Cv-universe and I'm intrigued.. think about it, qhat if God wants Gabriel to be powerful enough to defeat Satan and make him come back to his arms? What if God "created" Dracul for that very purpose?

Interesting theory! God refuses Gabriel entrance into Heaven so that he may remain on Earth and become more powerful. Then when Satan inevitably tries to return...Gabriel will be waiting to put an end to his plan. Really....I kinda like the sound of that. God basically created a being that despises both Satan and Himself.

Y'know, in Paradise Lost, there's a brief conversation between Satan and another dude in Hell before him, Chaos. I can't help but wonder if Cox is playing with the idea of having Dracula serve a different being to keep Satan off his back...

And Chaos is the demon/thing that Dracula is linked to, from way back in Crimson/Ebony stone LoI times, all the way through to the end when you go to the Chaos Realm and defeat that thing in the far future.

Perhaps, but who knows? Konami loves being late to the party when it comes to Castlevania DLC, if all of the examples of Harmony of Despairs delayed releases are any indication.

This is very true. There are legends about undead since thousand of years ago. But, actually, the "modern" vampire is the "christian" vampire. And the Belmonts are religious heroes long before LoS. Maybe because the original games take as a reference the old Hammer movies than, despite all the sex and violence, were fairy tales with strong morals. And maybe because each time the writers seek for inspiration about a Dracula origin story they come with the 1992 version of Bram Stoker's Dracula. That is mainly about why god allows evil.

I don't believe in gods but I don't believe in trolls either and I enjoy "Lord of the rings".
