To this games credit, at least we got a diffrent design of Satan.

Every other game I've played with Satan in it he has the exact same design, this is actually the fist time I've seen Satan in a game look like a fallen angel. Mercurysteam could have easly used the basic generic devil diesign use everywhere else but didn't and I have to applaud them at least for that.

Even if Satan looked like a hellish cross between Orochimaru and Sephiroth.

I still hold issue with them including Satan at all. Not only did it come out of nowhere, but defeating him means that you've basically defeated the end-all-be-all of evil. It's hard to go up against the forces of darkness and take them seriously when you've already beaten THE DEVIL. I know that he's not "dead" in the traditional sense and that the ending trailer reveals he's recouping his power, but still.....there needs to be a hellava lot of explanation as to how he'd come back and be more intimidating than he already was when Gabriel defeated him the first time.

Kind of makes every villain after look like a pansy in comparison.
But Gabriel being a shadow of his former self can make Satan seem threatening again. I mean, weak Dracula Gabriel seems a lot weaker than Holy-roids Gabriel.

I'm just glad they didn't go the Dante's Inferno route and have giant Satan penis all in your face for the final boss. I'm still seeking therapy from that encounter.

hahahahha, no shit. I know what you mean. That was the lamest final boss ever. That game had so much promise, but in the end it was.. uh.. flacid.

So hey, speaking of Tolkien and LotR, pop in your trusty copy of SotN and have a look at alot of your weapons and items.. Mormegil for example:
castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Mormegil

So maybe Cox took what SotN started, as permission to keep that theme going in LoS, even after LoS was Frankenstein'd into a CV..

Yeah, well, those weren't exactly the most correct translations. They were as related to LoTR as CORNELL and DORIN were to old canon in LoS, maybe even less so. Beating Satan is lame in my opinion, but I guess it sets up Dracula as BETTER AND BADDER. I guess.

Agreed. I love mythology, but what I love more is different takes on mythology. There are many different depictions of what elves look like. It's a much bolder move to try to add a bit of personal flair when designing monsters than deciding to stick with a popular look. I mean, they could've done some cool things to make the Ogre look unique. They could've given him horns, a third eye, make him half-undead(like a zombie ogre, which probably would've fit better within the CV series), tusks, two pairs of arms, and so on. I mean, the CV series has done that type of thing for a long time. They "re-imagined" the look of the demon Leviathan(which looks nothing like mythical description). Death's "other forms" like in SothN, CotM and HoD are pretty imaginative too. I think Dracula's "take" and transformation into his demon forms is also pretty imaginative(he doesn't just turn into a giant bat, but a DEMON). You don't always have to style literally close to the popular source material(or A popular source material). Persephone, which is a demon/godess of lore could be depicted as an evil, demonic maid. Be as hokey as it seems, the fact that they had the balls to say, "Let's make her a maid and go against any mythological stereotype just to show a NEW look to this mythological figure!", has gained more respect from me than "Oh, let's just design a monster based on the most basic description of the monster! And when we design something like, say, a goblin, do something really Tolkien-looking!".

This post encapsulates my dislike for a large number of the game's monsters. The later parts thankfully upped the ante a lot (the Headless Burrowers were AWESOME) but the earlier ones like the Ogre and Goblins were just paint-by-numbers designs you could see in any other high fantasy media ever. Cox getting mad about comparisons to other sources with stuff like this (not to mention the QTEs which made God of War stick out in my mind like a cosmic fucking neon sign) is a huge double standard.

This isn't to say IGA's games haven't had a number of lame creatures, namely the completely unfitting LOL ANIME influences.

True, but then again, enemies like Orcs, Wargs, Trolls, Goblins, etc. are pretty common in many, many action/adventure/fantasy games. They have basically become generic enemies that are widely used in all kinds of games/books, etc.
But that also begs the question of those types of enemies should've even been in the game in the first place. I think most of those should've been substituted with creatures like Mermen, Fleamen, a greater variety of knights, mudmen and maybe Peeping Eyes. The Wargs should've looked more like big wolves instead of wolf-like beasts.

I think Satan's inclusion won't be as weird anymore once we find out what his connection to Dracula is.

I thought the only reason Gabriel was able to defeat Satan was because God gave him power and made him immortal? So really Gabriel didn't defeat the ultimate evil, God did.
