Actually been playing through it a few times lately, just to see if there was any information at all in the dialogue concerning the overall CV continuity mentioned throughout it that I might've missed (I keep a complete written history of the established timeline on file that I update whenever possible). Nothing that I can find. - So far this appears to be the vaguest gaiden Igarashi-sama's crew has cooked up yet. At any rate, Albus Mode is owned and Shanoa is currently maxed out at level 99 in my top file with about 6 million in cash or something. Despite the flat story, game is still fun to play and looks great. And yes, Arma Felix does rule.

I found that playing Albus mode was kind of tedious. It just took so bloody long to level up even though I was fighting the strongest monsters. So to speed things up I stuck in my pro-action cart and leveled him up fast. Personally I think IGA should forget about the level up system with secondary characters unless they get the use of the full package deal like the main characters. Like what we had with Richter in SotN or Julius from AoS. Didn't need to level up there. All you had to do was to get the life ups after defeating the boss character and you got stronger that way. Not as big a hassel in my mind.

I think a lot of people are getting tired of them too. Nobody got bored of the traditional side-scrolling action that the series presented us with in the begining. I think the main reson is that in order for IGA to do one of his stories he needs to use the Metroidvania style of gameplay. But the reality is that you don't need to rely on just that system to make a good game story come to life. It can be in any format. Whatever your heart's desire.

Nobody got tired of the traditional side-scrolling action before because that's all there was before SotN!! There was no other option. When metroid-vania style maps came out, there was no reason to go back (at least for me), and the only reason that we are going back to non-exploration style hack-n-slash style games is because everything HAS to be 3-D now.

And an exploration based action-RPG in 3-D (like Oblivion or Fallout 3) is too much work.

Going back to hack and slash type gameplay? That was only developed in LOI—a game which, for whatever reason, seems to have set the standard for Castlevania in 3D if games continue along the lines of Lords of Shadow. The old Castlevanias are just fun platformer action games that require a lot of enemy dodging and precise hitting. I'd hardly call that a hack and slash formula. (Unless you weren't referring to the classic games in that manner.)

I never get tired of the old style of gameplay because it works beautifully, and on top of that the games were designed very well. SOTN is the only SOTN-style game that I would say is truly well-made. The others are good, and pretty fun, but none are—in my opinion—exceptionally well-made games. If the games would have been a bit more fun, and not confined to the limitations of handheld systems, I might not be so tired of the "Metroidvania" format.

The Adventure ReBirth is a nice throwback to the kind of Castlevania games I enjoy most. Perhaps making those linear games fun is just a whole lot easier than making the non-linear ones enjoyable. I see no reason why more games in that style weren't being made this entire time.

I think we're all used to spending just $10 on a classicvania game via Virtual Console and WiiWare.  They probably couldn't develop one now-adays and expect people to spend $30-$50 on them.  But give us a big expansive interconnected map you can backtrack through, and we'll do it.  (not sure how DXC fits into that statement...)

I know I'd shell out $50 for a full-fledged console Classicvania. It doesn't even have to be a short game; you can do alternate paths a la III and Rondo and make a whole ton of levels—but not just for the sake of quantity; they gotta be GREAT levels to boot. They could even wrap lots of story elements in there if they must. You'd have a save feature like Rondo, of course, where you can select from any level you've already played and played up to.

Heck, you could even combine the old style of gaming with the SOTN style. Have the non-linear, expansive map thing of the latter, while have the platforming and whip-wielding action of the former. You'd have to tweak the gameplay—it obviously wouldn't be a Metroidvania—and honestly I don't think I like the backtracking idea myself, but you could just do expansive levels with lots of hidden areas. The game could be one long level with save rooms and varying terrains.

I know that calling the classic CV games "hack-n-slash" is a bit of a stretch, but what I meant to say is that it looks like CV is going back to a linear "can't-go-in-the-door-behind-you" style of play. At least the old ones had platforming.

I think Dawn's still the best of the DS Castlevanias. Glyph system was a half-assed carbon copy from Aria. However, Glyph system was incredibly underpowered...

And no, gothic art do not add extra points.
