The game looks so slow and plodding in action, a horrible step down from OoE's smooth fast-paced combat. Also, there's no cohesion between the rooms at all. Everything is literally... slapped on. People say to lower standards just because it's a side project, but why would I support a low budget side project when that budget can be used for a more polished game. It's even more disappointing that it's the first 2D console game since SoTN. The whole Gergoth can shoot you from the other side of the stage is a horrendous idea. The pixel art of the DS games are meant to be seen at a closer level. The idea that you have to zoom out and can see the whole room not only ruins that aesthetic but it destroys the element of anticipation, traversing rooms. The exploration aspect of the Metroidvanias is completely stripped, but we don't even get decent level design as a compensation. From the maps shown, the enemy placements, the platforms, it's all just there. There's no sense of rhythm or pace. There's no groove. Everything about this game is arbitrary. This game is less Castlevania than Lords of Shadows.

Though I appreciate the new art for Jonathan and Charlotte, I rather they never showed up ever again.
Y-You can't be serious.

Sorry, but I had to post this. Are you bipolar or something like that?? Seriously, it doesn't matter the forum I see you posting (Sonic Retro, Sega forums), you're always like this: "OMG, this game is awesome"... two seconds later: "WTF, this game is terrible"... then people post some good reactions and you "That's the best thing ever". GOD, stop being so inconstant. X_X

That being said, I found this game better than I was expecting. But what I'm more interested now is that Iga confirmed he's working with more Castlevania besides this game, plus his interest on 3DS.
I am really freaked out there are people stalking me like my opinions matter or something. .__.

Nah, I was actually surprised to see you here, I lurk LoD thread almost everyday and this forum for almost 4 years. I never visited Sonic retro and Sega until Sonic 4 announcement. And your nick is easy to remember, you know.

Oh look, people bitching!

In short, this game is wholly unnecessary and a waste of resources that could have been put towards something more original and productive. HD or not, it's a Frankenstein of several games, and an obvious rush-job in terms of satisfying the 2D CV fans. I wish I did know the politics behind why this and not one of a slew of other possible 2D console games (Battle of 1999, Pre-Liz Bartley possibilities, etc) was not done instead. Was it because Konami made IGA hash this out to make sales and stall for time until Lords of Shadow is released? Was it to satiate the outcry for multiplayer Castlevania? Did they throw darts blindly at a board and this turned up and they said "Fuck it, lets go with it."? There could be a myriad of possibilities.

I pity IGA. This was either forced on him against his better judgment, or he's really scraping the bottom of the barrel. My guess is the former, due to the aforementioned storylines he himself has hinted at in the past. Konami might just want new blood and let IGA fade, and if so they kinda deserve a swift kick to the balls for doing it like this. Let the guy fade with some dignity, if that is the desired end result. Don't force this crap on him, if that is indeed what is happening.

You can like the game for what it looks like on the surface - mindless fun and a way to play a bit of multiplayer with a few buddies. But don't disregard what this is deep down - a shoddy mish-mash of past games with nothing original about it and poorly masked as an excuse to boast about HD graphics. It's really not much more than that.

Ayami did the art.  Saw it in the credits.

Anyone who says Lords of Shadow will be better than Harmony of Despair are brainwashed by Kojima, and forget that there is room to enjoy 2-D in new fun ways!   HoD is much closer to classic CV gameplay and art style and mood!    Lords of Shadow spits on everything Castlevania and can never replace 2-D Castlevania!

Co-op is very innovative and a good way to enjoy Castlevania in a different way instead of a straight up single player SOTN or OOE clone.

HoD is really looking to be what I envisioned for a long time.  And they said there will be DLC planned for more characters and possibly more stages and items!

The gear system is brilliant!  It's better than allowing people to get raw level ups and just making it too easy!  at least gear based enhancements has a better chance of keeping things balanced and interesting!

Harmony of Despair truly is shaping up to be the GREATEST GAME EVER CREATED!!!!!   ^_^
5 legendary characters I always wanted to use on console (well Alucard already was, but the other 4
were DS exclusive.   Castlevania always belongs on console.)

This should come to PS3 but I'm convinced to buy a Xbox360 for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    CV fans underestimate the fun factor and magnificent value of this Castlevania!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when you're old enough to understand people can enjoy and appreciate something you don't enjoy,
then you'll see taste is based on perspective, not rights and wrongs.

preachy bolded misplaced self-righteousness

It's funny seeing this come from the guy who's quite comfortable with dimishing those who favor LoS as "brainwashed by Kojima".

The series is long overdue for a competent 3D adventure. You're acting like a successful 3D title will kill 2D Castlevania, which is a completely hairbrained assumption given all the other originally 2D game series that regularly release both 3D and 2D-styled installments. With the 3DS around the corner, the possibility for another 2D Castlevania in the future is even greater than before.

So kindly zip it with all these hypocritical, hyperbolic, and irrational ramblings.
