You know what would make the BEST CV fighting game?

Not to make one at all.

Just drop any ideas here that you feel would make a Castlevania fighting game worth buying, playing, and treasuring.

Here's some of my ideas:

1.) Make the characters LOOK LIKE THEMSELVES (obviously).

2.) Make the game deliberately non-canon, rather than make us sit through another round of "IZ JUJMEANT KANON?" fights that figure so prominently into my memory.

3.) More characters from more games. I remember seeing the cast for Judgment and going "Seriously? THAT'S IT?"

4.) Incorporate some guest characters whose presence could be logically justified in a Castlevania setting, like Dante from Devil May Cry winding up in Castlevania while hunting Devils, or a character like Terra or Aqua from the Kingdom Hearts universe encountering Castlevania on their travels across worlds. Not saying those specific characters should be included, but their presence could be explained by the mechanics of their respective universes, so they make good examples for what I'm trying to suggest.

5.) All the characters can talk. Except Simon. 'Nuff said.

I can't believe you guys are going to force my hand on this one but ok. Ahasverus has the right idea but this is what should happen.

Vampires, monsters, demons, wraiths, blood and gore. What other than these two games can you think of with such history that have all these qualities?

Two words: Netherealm Studios.

Mortal Kombat 2011 was an excellent game. It gives lessons to Oshiri Ono in HOW to make a good meaty fighting game. Accessible but deep. Lots of extras artworks unlockables etc.. and also.. DAT STORY MODE.. it's the first fighter with a well presented story you can actually care about. The way they make you play with every character and how it unfolds... and that lenght.. it lasted like 6 hours making it go toe with toe with moden FPS campaigns. The roster was enormous with fan favorites revisited and refined. Of course there were missing ones but knowing that it takes in account the first 3 games its almost 40 characters are perfect. INcredibly knowing that capcom releases 15 and the other 25 as DLC. Not here!.

Incredible.. the MK2011 way is THE wayto go for a CV fighter.

Exactly, yes and thank you.

Technically speaking the boss fights in Castlevania are in a small way the forefather to the fighting game. I don't agree with you on not making another CV fighter but Judgement should never have seen the light of day. It was flawed incomplete and blasphemed what I think was a great idea. It needed to be 2-D with a solid engine and not so much emphasis on combos but actual use of special abilities, actual offensive and defensive aspects of fighting. The characters need to be dark and gritty not Anime pretty (keep the breasts though).

Honestly, when I first heard a Castlevania fighter was in development, I was thinking along the lines of Darkstalkers, Guilty Gear, Marvel vs Capcom, etc.; a traditional 2D fighting game with an interesting single player story and pretty much endless possibilities for tournaments. Castlevania has a good roster for that sort of thing, and enough environments to make it happen.

A 3D fighter with selectable weapons like Soul Blade or SoulCalibur would also have worked, and even the free roaming brawler formula they picked isn't intrinsicly flawed; I hear Power Stone remains popular, and the Dissidia Final Fantasy games are a fantastic way for Final Fantasy fans to waste time, though they are flawed and limited in move selection, the games got around it by animating the characters in such a way that they still move dynamically, with secret chain combos that can be activated by meeting certain combo requirements and such. The Dissidia games have limited actual combat movesets, but they are still entertaining to play, and on PS360, they would have rocked even more. Adding in little nods and in-jokes to the character's respective games, like Tidus mocking the Emperor's infamous death cry ("What's with this unguAAAAAAAHHH business?") or the characters mocking Exdeath's worship of the Void really brought the games into their own own.

And yet, why do I enjoy the Dissidia games and hate Judgment so much? Dissidia was made for the fans, and every decision was made knowing that pretty much ONLY the fans would even play the game. Judgment seems like it was all about compromise, trying to keep it competitive on the market in a world of fighters and shooters, and hoping the "Castlevania" name would sell it a few copies more. No visible consideration was given to the fans of the series. It spent much of it's time committing similar sins as Lords, which is evident in the wildly stupid character designs that do not resemble the originals, the anime-inspired art style, and imitation hard rock soundtrack. It spends so much time aping other fighters, any Castlevania references felt like last-minute additions. Under IGA, the references make more sense than Lords, I'll admit, but still, whips and names aside, it hardly feels like a Castlevania game, but rather like someone slathered a Castlevania paint job on the halfway dim bastard love child of Power Stone's gameplay engine and Kingdom Hearts' character designs.

And I think that's where Judgment committed it's greatest sin; Smash Bros., Dissidia, Marvel vs Capcom... all those great mash-up fighters were made for the fans of the franchises represented. They are (usually) crafted with love and care, with attention paid to how everything worked, and furthermore, the characters are accurate to their original portrayals, so fans could have their fun.

Judgment was made for the fistful of yen it might bring home. The fans were barely even considered. The characters couldn't have been more different. The story was nonsensical. The whole game was a mess the fans ended up not really wanting. By alienating the only people who would have been CERTAIN to buy the game, Konami destroyed any chance of ensuring a competitive fighter on the market. Newer gamers were put off by the limited nature of the game, and an outright sadistic single player mode that delights in tormenting you as you flop towards the finish line. Old fans were put off by those same things, but also how the game portrayed and treated the characters and story.

Instead of being a celebration of the franchise, Judgment wound up as a cruel joke mocking it.

This needs to change if there's ever to be another attempt at a Castlevania fighter. It needs to be made with the fans considered above all else, as those are the people who will buy the game. Anyone else is a welcome accident.

How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

Wasn't Judgement eaxctly that? Mindless rip-off of the most famous video game crossover?
I always assumed it was, like another Konami "fighting game" TMNT: Mutant Melee.

If it was, unfortunately people didn't like the formula of whatever it ripped off enough or the rip off wasn't executed well enough (I don't even really know what fighting game it ripped off really, if any, beyond just "generic 3D fighter"). There are huge mobs of people who like SSB and its style though.

If anything, it ripped off of Power Stone.
However, because it was only 2 player and not 4 player, Power Stone 2 (the sequel), a game probably a decade older, turns out to be more fun. :P

Someone has probably already said this, but the only way to make a good Cv fighting game is to keep Iga the hell away from it, and to let either Capcom, SNK, or Arc System Works (Blaze Blue) make it.

I'd vote SNK, provided the game is exactly like Real Bout Fatal Fury 2. Minus the multiple planes, because I was never sure how they worked.

Konami's the publisher of Skullgirls. What would y'all think of Alucard as a guest fighter in Skullgirls some years down the road? If Reverge Studios complains about "What, you don't like our characters?", the counter is "Yes we do, so let your ladies get physical with the publisher's dreamiest hunk."

Reverge may want a more hand-to-hand character, so Alucard might have just lost his equipment again, and fights with wolf claws and his cloak. He might break out a whip for a special move. Reverge might want to emphasize Alcuard's wolf and bat forms, so they might put extra fur on his cloak.

In his ending, a dying Bloody Marie agrees to attach her soul to a weapon so that it becomes like the Vampire Killer. Only said weapon is a vacuum cleaner rather than a whip.

Others wants, cartoonish and wacky looking fighter.
With such diverse desires, Konami'd better never made CV fighting game. j/k

I haven't played CVJ, but from what I've seen, the game looks like it was created quickly just to cash in on popular name, like HD for example. I personally think it was done, because Konami understood that IGA's formula stopped working and they wanted to grab as much money as possbile from CV before (possible demise) seriously reconsider they approach to the series.

I really doubt Judgment was even intended for the fighting game audience. It seems more like a casual fighting game akin to the Naruto or Bleach games. It was even outsourced to the same company that did a few of those titles. Considering they got Obata, they were probably seeking to expand the fanbase to idk, anime fans. I guess it was less milking and more of a sign that Konami felt Castlevania was in trouble.

lol judgment worked really well
