As joke-y Lurker's suggestion might be, he does have a point. If Skullgirls turns out to be a big hit (which is pretty likely IMO) letting Reverge Studios handle a Castlevania fighting game might not be such a bad idea after all.

It is precisely because it never cared, that people do care.  It's something which it's lacking, because that which it has, it has lackluster of.

I don't want SNK Playmore to work on it, but at the same time I sure as hell definitely don't want Capcom to work on it. As much as I don't like the path SNK Playmore has taken with its fighters (later KOF games don't seem as fun), I abhor Capcom's fighters (and always have). That said, I'd have to go with ASW because of Guilty Gear. I have GGXX and have to say it provided that breath of fresh air that I mentioned in the Games You're Not Allowed to Hate thread Mortal Kombat 2 had for me.

Considering they got Obata, they were probably seeking to expand the fanbase to idk, anime fans. I guess it was less milking and more of a sign that Konami felt Castlevania was in trouble.
I think Obata was included because his art / series was popular at the time. I don't think they seriously thought that, if they redesign characters with help of popular artist and put them into mediocre fighting title it will make game instantly beloved by anime fans. Especially since there never were Castlevania anime or something to attract such crowd before CVJ.

Dawn and Portrait literally had their art styles to expand their audiences. Plus you know, including an artist because he was popular implies that they're seeking to expand their fanbase, or trying to attract sales outside of the normal audience Castlevania targets.

Wasn't Judgement eaxctly that? Mindless rip-off of the most famous video game crossover?
I always assumed it was, like another Konami "fighting game" TMNT: Mutant Melee.

It doesn't at all play like Super Smash Bros. at all, though.
I'm telling you guys, it plays like Power Stone 2
The Konami game that does play like Super Smash Bros. (but not as well) is Dream Mix TV World Fighters.

Well, for one, a new CV fighting game would need to be built on a solid engine. The freeform one they chose for Judgment doesn't work as well as it could have. I'd recommend 2.5D but it would probably end up having to be 3D. The game would need no more than 20 fighters to make the cast as balanced as possible but not TOO balanced. ;)

As far as a control setup, keeping it simple would be best. Have strong and weak attack buttons, a kick button, a throw/block button, and a Special Action button. The Special Action button would control attacks and moves that are unique to each character. For example, Simon might have a parry, while Trevor would use it in conjunction with other buttons/directionals to make wild combos. Sypha could have a meter that builds up as she gets hits in allowing her to use different (and maybe random!) magic spells, etc.

Doing the game in the spirit of fanservice is what would really get it over. But Konami seems to be playing to everyone who ISN"T a CV fan rather than the existing fanbase.

Screw 3D arena like in Judgement, do 2D fighter like Mortal Kombat 2011. The character can be 2D sprites or 3D models. Don't really care, as like the fighting is done in 2D environments.

The TMNT fighting game that was done for the SNES and Genesis was actually pretty good. It was nothing spectacular but I think Konami could make the 2D engine work for a Castlevania fighter if they really gave a fuck. Which it seems like they don't. Why does something so awesome as Castlevania have to be in the hands of such fucktards as corporate picklesmoochers. :-[
Anywho the game needs to have characters who are dark imposing fearsome and forceful and look like they would in older more serious gritty titles. The anime hair styles, the flash and flair of Japanese influence should not apply here. This is a game about European historical characters for the most part. Make them look European (unless see link http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,2623.msg48338.html#msg48338). Now I was very big into Street Fighter at one point but it got to be all about flash, combos and too much humor. Make this game about fighting, positioning, moving, countering, escaping, teleporting and using special moves and keep the combos toned down but don't fully eliminate them. Games are about action so no standing still. I have seen the last two Mortal Kombat games and while they have both has some innovations the games still look like they are too combo heavy and I have also seen that Player one gets priority if both players attack at the exact same time with the same attacks and that's straight up shitbaggery. For once could Konami please give us a gem of a title?

No. They're too busy counting the money we gave them for games we didn't even want.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

The sick joke is that if we didn't buy those games, Konami would translate that as meaning Castlevania is dead and never make another Castlevania game ever.

The Konami game that does play like Super Smash Bros. (but not as well) is Dream Mix TV World Fighters.

Power Stone 2 was awesome, and yes, it totally does.

As for another Castlevania fighting game, I can see it going either of two ways:
1. A 2D fighting game akin to King of Fighters or Guilty Gear (preferably done by the same sprite artists)
2. Another 3D fighting game akin to FF: Dissidia or Power Stone

Off the cuff, I prefer the first. They'd be able to maintain the familiar, attractive dark gothic, Romanesque art style of Symphony and its off shoots, while playing in safer territory. IMO, theme-based fighting games need to play it safe when it comes to fighting mechanics so that people who can't play a game solely for its characters and theme still have a reason to play.

On the other hand, if they fix Judgment's many problems, I could see another 3D fighter being good. Taking a page out of the Dissidia notebook and freeing up character movement, while perhaps changing the damage system to something akin to the brave system, would be awesome. It would also leave room for the loot system that so many love. Obviously the game would need to be a lot less floaty than Dissidia, focusing more twitchier ground combat, but that's why they shouldn't throw away the Power Stone format entirely. Outside player combat, you could have monster levels where you'd have to fight multiple Castlevania monsters at once.

Haha, at first glance I read that as: "I did not read a word of that I liked"

Glad I was wrong. I'm a huge fighting game junkie, so it would be nice to see something quality coming out of the series in that genre.

Unlike about 98% of the Castlevania fanbase, I find Judgment to be more of a curiosity, or heck, a guilty pleasure. Yes, the controls are limited (thank heavens for my Gamecube controller!), the attack lists are unusually short, the characters don't look or act like themselves for the most part, and yet I still enjoy it somehow.

I'm one of those people who thinks the Castlevania games should be exploring more genres to help escape the numerous Metroidvanias over the years, but because of Judgments poor reception, Konami is unlikely to make another Castlevania game, and even if they did, the majority of fans would avoid it like the plague, even if it was either based on SSB or a 2-D fighter.
