At least Patrick's Stewart's voice made up for it. It can make up for just about anything, really.

As much as I really do enjoy Patrick Stewart's voice, I felt Robert Carlyle was a much better narrator for the game. I think they should've had Carlyle narrate the game as Gabriel. It would have given us a much bigger connection to him, rather than Zobek following him around the entire time, stalking him like a dirty old man.

As I've mentioned in the MoF HD thread, Dracula references the dialogue from SotN once more when he says to Alucard, "Join me in remaking this world." (SotN's line: "Still uttering the same nonsense. No matter. Now is the time to put aside your weak, human side and join me in remaking this world!")

I'm not surprised. It was thrown in so casually, and Robert Carlyle delivered it so well that I didn't even notice it until my brother pointed it out.

It's just kinda annoying how several people over the years were adamant in saying how LoS hands down was the best story in all of Castlevania
Sure, the presentation might be leagues better than what we've got, but as for the plot itself? Nothing really special or unique about it, prunyuu~
It's still the best, but that speaks volumes about how bad was the old series in the story department (Ecclesia's was nice though)

Got to disagree about Ecclesia although I think the game story is pretty meh. Shanoa has no personality, the plot twist is really really really predictable and there is just no stake in it. I don't think Lords of Shadow is the best. I think the best story though is Castlevania 2, I mean concept of collecting all the body parts in order to kill Dracula while being curse is pretty badass. Game stories don't necessarily have to be voice acted or have scenes it has to convey the story to you.

My Top Five Best story lines in Castlevania for me
1) Castlevania 2
2) Super Castlevania 4
3) Castlevania 3 : Dracual Curse
4) Lords of Shadow
5) Symphony of the NIght.

Simple. Badass stories  ;D doesn't mean it has to have depth :P. Super Castlevania 4 has atmosphere of you Simon Belmont going through perlious journey to kill Dracula in one night. The atmosphere and stages and inventive bosses really sells is to you. Also Castlevania 3 has four different heroes: Trevor Belmont, Alucard, Sypha and Grant a pirate to take down Dracula. I think the simplicity and what story is makes it good. If story has added depth or cutscenes or voice acting doesn't make it any better. Although now that I think about it I would switch Symphony of the Night with Castlevania 64 for the number five place. Although Castlevania 64 is pretty bad in gameplay department it really does have the best 3D storyline other then Lords of Shadow.

Ecclesia's wasn't great story-wise, but I kind of appreciated that they throw you for a loop on the whole "ally is obviously possessed, you have to free him" trope by just killing off Albus the second you fight him.

I agree with you. Or rather, I find the entire LoS trilogy MUCH more interesting than the older timeline. Some plot points are rather predictable, just like other games, but the presentation is so much better in this trilogy.

The old games, I just loved their stories for their simplicity. I never found myself begging to play a Castlevania game to find out what happens next in the story (until I played LoS and MoF was announced). I found that story was mostly in afterthought in previous entries (with the exception of the somewhat plot-heavy ones like CoD and the N64 games), with the main focus being gameplay. I personally think MercurySteam went for both with their entries.

Imo, the story in LoS was pretty stupid, like every other Castlevania I've played so far.

While LoS' storyline gradually grew on me these past few years, calling it the best CV had to offer is pushing it. I'll say it: Aria of Sorrow has the most memorable plot Castlevania has ever conceived, hands down. The game's story was literally unlike anything we've ever seen before with a unique twist to the Dracula-Belmont legacy that wasn't cheesy or predictable, while also giving us an even more mystifying backstory that has still yet to be realized, and still has us clamoring for it 10 years later. It modernized the typical Castlevania setting while simultaeneously maintaining that familiar approach and doesn't alienate any of the fans. It gave us a unique cast of characters. And it also gives us a satisfying closure to 1,000 years worth of bloodshed, without feeling empty or dull. And lets face it, fighting Julius was the absolute culmination of that 1,000 years; 1,000 years of Belmont sacrifice has produced what you see before you, the ultimate Vampire Killer. How many video game series can anybody name that has been ongoing since the 80s, has delivered a final chapter that most of the fans are satisfied with (DoS notwithstanding)? Is it flawless? No, but god-damn, IGA really struck gold when he conceived this game, and not even his biggest hater can ever take that away from him.

The only thing that would've made AoS better is if it had been a disc-based console release, and even as it stands it's still the closest we've gotten that arguably can dethrone Symphony. Until LoS2 is released, no other CV game can even touch AoS plot-wise.

Crisis I respectfully disagree. I actually think Aria of Sorrow was an attempt to try to appeal to Japanese market by blatantly setting it in Japan and making most of the main cast Japanese, yeah Soma Cruz isn't a exchange student and recarnation thing bleh. For some fans it must been a great end to the series but for me it felt like a super wacky plot that really jumped shark. Although I will agree with you that Julius Belmont is great and gameplay is good but plot for me no it didn't feel like a proper end to the series. I think the N64 games actually had right idea about plot so if there is future Castlevanias I would love if they took some inspiration from them.

BTW, which of the reboot games was it mentioned that the castle is an evil entity itself and why it's ever changing?

I can agree with Crisis. While the japan shoehorning was stupid, the concept was at least original. I mean, it wasn't Belmont vs Dracula to rescue his girl or just kick ass again. or Dracula's son turning on him (again)

The idea that Dracula when cut off from his power, instead reincarnated as a normal Human with the POTENTIAL to become Dracula again, who instead tries to fight that fate, was neat.

LoS plot while probably more expansive and just more present than previous CV plots, is still more in line with them, like I said before. It's a Belmont off to kill evil because his wife. It just has a twist is all.
Laura and Gabriel arrive in the deepest cave of the castle and... they find IGA.

The concept of Dracula's reincarnation is AoS was really interested, but very badly executed IMO. Who's that Soma Cruz? He has like no reason to be the reincarnation of Dracula other than "fate stuff". The other candidates were born the day Dracula died so that's still okay for them.

LoS' story is okay, but the presentation is very good (good voice acting, interesting characters with deeper background, etc.)
