I know this has been discussed slightly in the forums before but...
Wow. This movie is so ridiculously Lords of Shadow that I felt it was relevant to bring up again.
Even when you take into account that both use the same source material for their plots some similarities are just too coincidental.
It goes beyond coincidence in my opinion. There are all kinds of similarities that I'm too lazy to write down but there are a few worth pointing out.

Baba Yaga was supposed to be in the movie but got cut.

If you have seen the ending you know that...

Also before Lords of shadow 2 released in Japan, Konami had this poster in their website. If I remember it had something to do with winning tickets to the movie.

I bet most of you have seen the trailer/movie and have seen the other super obvious similarities so im not going to continue... Anyone have something to contribute?

I saw the trailer when it released and scoffed at the LoS vibe. But I checked it out at a dollar theater eventually and I am glad I did. The movie was surprisingly good.

People who didn't know about LOS liked the movie. I suppose the sympathetic Dracula appealed well.
I, however, who knows about LOS, called rip-off!
Mirena = Maria
Master Vampire = Zobek

Re. the ending, I think the studio wants to revive the entire Monster franchise ala Avengers. But apparently kept it on hold.

Re. the Japan movie collaboration, yeah, I've mentioned that before.

It's a Vlad III origin story that only sticks to history where the titular character and maybe a few things about Mehmed are involved. No Radu, no Poenari, no Targoviste, no backstory on Vlad II and Vlad III's time as a political prisoner as a kid, no mention of his pseudonyms other than The Impaler (for chrissake just use Kakizli Bey once, ONCE!) LoS vibes or not it's already lost points for me. Make SOME effort to trump Coppola's Dracula, people, c'mon.

Also, wasn't the Master Vampire like Caligula or some such shit? I haven't seen it yet (not that I care about spoilers).

The movie's okay -- your average blockbuster. I think Universal has The Mummy planned for this year or 2016.

@D9: The master vampire was not named in the movie.

I don't know, they seem to have started pre-production already (2016 for release date, just checked). The Wolfman seems to be the next one after The Mummy.

I remember the Master vampire being credited as Caligula somewhere when the film was released, but it seems the info is gone.

Caligula? Really?? That's the name of the first of the most three terrible Emperors of Rome. Caligula. Claudius. Nero.

Yep, I'm aware of that. It's hinted in the movie the Master was human at the time of the Roman Empire or so.

Re. the ending, I think the studio wants to revive the entire Monster franchise ala Avengers. But apparently kept it on hold.

Word is that they do. Universal wants to use all of their classic monsters for team-ups ala the Avengers. Can't say that's too surprising since Universal did this back in the 40s and tried to do it with Van Helsing. But apparently this plan/announcement was made after Dracula Untold was in production so it's unclear if it will be part of the relaunch or abandoned.

I don't see it working because the Universal Monsters have unfortunately a tiny fraction of the cultural cache they did even 25 years ago when stuff like this http://www.i-mockery.com/halloween/bag/universal-studios-pepsi-party-monsters.php was made.

I THINK The Mummy is the first one of that shared universe, and that DU is out.

Wouldn't surprise me since I think DU underperformed for their expectations and the Stephen Sommers/Brendan Fraser Mummy reboot from almost 20 years ago (damn I feel old) did well and seems to be fondly remembered today. I'd kinda like to see a Fraser cameo in a new Mummy honestly, maybe as a mentor-type.

I agree with Ratty. That Mummy 20 years ago is better than DU.
Frasier cameo reminds me of Spock in Star Trek ... noooo.... Nimoy..... /sob

Is the film really that bad? I was planning to see it when the trailers came out but then heard nothing of it.

It's not THAT bad, it's just okay.
