I don't think this'll be the default controller. Nintendo does dumb shit, but I can't see them shooting themselves in the foot with another "gimmicky" controller. I think this is gonna be the handheld unit that lets you play games in a portable fashion, which was rumored to be the NX's big thing.

If they go with this as the default, it'll scare consumers because it's not conventional and it'll scare dev&publishers because we live in an age where every big game has to be multiplat across all major platforms to make money, it needs to be done as quickly and cheaply as possible, and giving them the worry of making a UI and finding ways to make their game work on this new controller will cost them time and money. If it's an accessory, I see it in a much better light.

I think it looks pretty fucking cool personally. I really do like the gamepad, and playing games on the gamepads screen was awesome for me. I've always liked new ways of controlling games. I only hate if it gets in the way of gameplay and becomes cumbersom (pretty much all NES accessories minus the Zapper) or if a game poorly implements them (which would be the devs fault obviously(can be forgiven if they have a tight schedule)).

Nintendo games and exclusive third party game will definitely use the controller well I think, as was proves by Wii and Wii U exclusives, but it's multiplats I'm  worried about. Like I said, they're not gonna wanna put the time or money into finding a way to make their game work on this controller (except for Treyarch CoDs, which have amazing Nintendo ports). I'd love to play good games on this thing, imagine FPS games with better aiming using touch (hopefully better implemented than the Steam controller's) and RTS & Sim games would find a great home with this. Idk, just my thoughts.

As long as there are classic controllers with actual buttons, I'm on board.
Most games still need buttons, digital buttons are a no no especially for fighters and the like.

The NX controller gets points for inventiveness and originality. But that's it. I'm not one for gimmicky controllers either. And personally I'd take functionality over this new patent any day. The Play Station and SNES controllers are still the best you can get IMO. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I don't like the no buttons controller. it feels too much like playing on an apple i-device.
I like the click-y feel of button pressing.

Wow...sounds weird.

But wait, doesn't it basically have buttons?  The way I'm understanding it, the 2 joysticks are embedded to be flush with the screen, and there are various side and shoulder buttons.  I guess there aren't any on the face, but I was thinking the side/shoulders were their replacement.

I think the wii-upad is a step in a good direction for nintendo, I can imagine something like Fallout 4 on the NX using the Pip-boy app as the controller interface.
Then again, I like the idea of controller screens since the dreamcast.

That was my main concern. I think it'll ship with a normal gamepad, because like you said, platformers and fighting games especially are shit on touchscreens.

Well put. I think they should go for this combines with a classic controller pro, like those Wii U mockups that were all over the place when we knew it as Project Cafe. I always thought that was a perfect design for the innovative + normal.

My guess is they wanna stand out, as the other consoels are so similar, but they don't understand that their exclusives can sell systems.

Another thing I think is that they still wanna market to the kids and family, so making the console cheaper is a good move in their eyes. Making a gimmick with cheap hardware compared to the competition seems better for that market to them I guess. Again, failing to understand something: kids and parents game in phones and tablets, and if they want core gaming they'll pick up a console where the popular third parties are.

Some have been saying that this controller IS the console. Think about it: There's a card slot on this thing, and having the touch buttons makes more sense on a handheld than on a console cus you're looking at the thing constantly.

But then, you have the home console, which you plug the handheld into. The console reads the game from the controller and uses its own power to run a game and make it look way better. When playing on the TV, you use normal controllers.

This is still a problem for devs tho, cus they have to optimize their games for-
1. Handheld touch interface
2. Looking this way on handheld, that way on console

Definitely. If they allow devs to make normal games for the console with a normal controller and let some games use the touch controller as well that would be good. Or maybe a dev could release it normal controller only and update it in the future for the handheld/touch controller.

Honestly, the Wii-U is an amazing Console and everything it's doing it lightyears away from the PS4 and Xbox One, who've devolved to a multimedia center like the Phillips CDI but the gaming industry as a whole has become a very shallow place, as graphical pinnacle over everything else, and worse "gamers" are okay with it. This is why I refuse to buy Crysis 3, while it looks Stellar and beyond compare, it's a fucking terrible game and not even worth a second playthrough.

Not really a big deal, good chance that the NX can out-perform those expensive toasters earning those 3rd party devs in a heartbeat. on top of that Nintendo would most likely be the first to develop a 4k game that'll look great in 60fps on a console.
