So a beta for a new NES emulator with a 3D effect was recently released, and one of the games demoed was the first Castlevania:

As you can see, it is very much a beta with a lot of problems/bugs, but when the angel is adjusted it produces some interesting effects. What do you think, would you play the Castlevania games or any other NES titles in a "3D mode" like this?

That is legit trippy in a way that only prototype tech can be.

I can't wait to see what this blossoms into.
How not to be a dark lord: the answer to that is a terribly interesting answer that involves an almost Jedi-like adherence to keeping oneself under control and finding ways to be true to yourself in a way that doesn't encourage the worst parts of you to become dangerously exaggerated and instead feeds your better nature. Also, protip: don't fuck with Alchemy or strike up any deals with ancient Japanese Shinigami gods no matter how tempting the deal or how suavely dressed the Shinigami is.

That's quite the transition! Definitely needs more work but it looks promising.

Looks like Simon is walking on Piano keys. Maybe you could have him jump to the beat, then we'd be onto something. #Classicvaniamusicaltheatre

Hmm... I wonder what 3D Worldrunner and Rad Racer would look like with this emulator?

That is legit trippy in a way that only prototype tech can be.

I can't wait to see what this blossoms into.

This makes me want to play Summer Carnival '92 Recca on this emulator.  The game's really fast, colorful and has some trippy effects.  Some sick music as well.

This appears to be voxelizing each tile.
In addition, it looks like the code is finding the contrast between tiles/pixels/voxels and using it in some kind of algorithm in order to determine what shape the resulting cube would be.

The result is, for example (if you look at the Dr. Mario Viruses and at the good doctor, himself), an array of either tiles or pixels that arrange themselves topographically to 'resemble' a 3D character, not unlike the characters from 3D-Dot Game Heroes.

The algorithm messes up at times, though, and as such, you get nonsense like the blue sky turning into a big huge blob in front of the play area, etc.
It's possible that, in time, it'll improve... but it'd have to be done on a game-by-game basis, not unlike what they did with Kirby, Kid Icarus, and Excitebike, on the 3DS.

The idea is interesting, and I'd be curious to see how it develops...but with how it works at the moment I don't know that I'd want to play games that way.  Here's hoping they figure things out a bit better!
