My point exactly.  He was very 3 dimensional and done well.  My point is that 1 dimensional characters are boring, and it is always better to give motivation then to just make someone evil for evil's sake.

Your anology doesn't work.  that's like saying a character is 1 dimensional because that would be like saying a character was 1 dimensional because he seemed so in the first few chapters in a book.  The story was not finished.  You can't just take part of a story to define a character.

Let's get back to cv, ok.  To be honest, I think that the more we understand a character, the better.  After all, a villain who is evil for evil's sake is boring and the story of LoI makes drac seem more human.  It simply makes the villains more complex and allows us to get inside their head.  Then again, not everyone is interested in that.
Unfortunately, most people just want a clear cut "good vs. evil" game with no significant plot twists that is easy to follow.  However, I think the really intelligent players would want a complex story with significant plot twists to make the story more unpredictable and not so clear cut.
This just my opinion and I apologize is I have offended anyone.

..and it is always better to give motivation then to just make someone evil for evil's sake.

Iago from Othello comes to mind.

That dude was evil because he liked being evil, there is no real backstory to him save from his details throughout the play, which show that he's jealous, conniving, and just... EVIL... for no apparent reason.  I think he's just a schadenfreude that enjoys being a jerk for no apparent reason, or "For the lulz" as they say in the Interwebz.

That's not to say he's 1-dimensional.  I'd say quite the opposite; he's so multi-dimensional that we just cannot understand him at all (like a Tesseract. :P).

luca blight(suikoden 2) comes to mind. he did shit simply because he could, and upon death exclaimed how evil he was, but he had no backstory, and people thought he was one of the best villains ever.

For someone trying to be so pedantic, you seem to forget that Bloodlines (where all this Stoker nonsense came from) says that Quincey’s son was there to see his dad die. Remember that part in the book? No? Well that right there shows that the novel can’t be used to disprove anything stated in game, because SPOILER they are two different universes. Dracula in the book is NOT the same character at all as in CV. Same name, different character.
lurk moar. the part about john seeing quincey killing drac and then dying at the age of 2 was bullshit that americans added to their version.

didn't say it doesn't, just the example you used was totally wrong since you tried to pass almost fanfiction level material as a fact. :o

Well you fail to recognize that many people (myself) included are very very opposed to the death penalty.

Wow, this spiralled out of control. I'll just reiterate the point (if it's already been made) that Stoker did not come up with the reincarnation story. That's one thing that kinda bugs me (because I'm like that) about MrP's Castlevania Realm, it talks about "the troubled vampire menace" of "the novel" Bram Stoker's Dracula. Just goes to show that Coppola did a good job of convincing people that his film was a faithful adaptation of the source of material. It's a resonable film, quite interesting, but it does take liberties (with the novel and with history).

DISCLAIMER: I haven't read (most of) the novel Dracula.
