I'm a few days late for modding this thread, but it looks like things have settled down.
We do indeed have some very passionate individuals who are very adamant about expressing their opinion on how things "Castlevania" should be. I think that, overall, this is a positive thing, but it can make one very rigid and unable to view new games and experiences with a fresh perspective.
If I don't like something about, say, LoI (for example), as a human being, I can use that one thing to psych myself into disliking everything about LoI. Just like how people dislike the idea of anachronistic objects such as "Skeletons on Motorcycles" and immediately hate everything about the game that features them, when clearly other games have used that same plot device (LoS, CV3, Bloodlines, etc.).
It's strange how we humans love to force ourselves to be negative. Here are some instances of the extreme level of negativity we have seen from the fans over the years, here:
-DraculaXX sucks (SNES version) because it is not Rondo.
-Symphony's overrated, because half of the game is a cop-out reverse uninspired version of the other half.
-Alucard must be alone forever, and not be allowed to fall for anyone.
-Legends sucks because it's not as good as Belmonts' Revenge.
-Legends sucks because a Belmont must never be female.
-Legends sucks because Sonia may have been romantically involved with Alucard (see "Alucard must be alone forever" rule).
-Belmonts must be pure, untarnished, and may not have descendants with last names other than Belmont. Any Belmont descendant that's a descendant because of a female Belmont, automatically loses all powers of a Belmont the minute they lose that last name (WTF). This means Reinhardt Schneider sucks, so his game sucks. John Morris sucks, so his game sucks, and Jonathan Morris sucks, so his game sucks too. They are not true Belmonts and are not allowed to touch whips without dying.
-Legends sucks because it contradicts CV3.
-I hate CotM because I have to double-tap to run and it's annoying.
-I hate CotM because most of the music is boring versions of old tunes (oddly enough, I've seen the word 'love' for this game for the same reason).
-Any game that features a non-Belmont will fall into obscurity in the pages of CV history. Hector, Cornell, Reinhardt, Shanoa, Nathan, and John & his son Jonathan, they are never to be referenced in any other games. Apparently, only Richter matters.
-HoD sucks because of slow floaty controls for Juste, and because the game is a convoluted mess with low-quality music.
-HoD sucks because the plot is essentially the same as CotM's, with a generic damsel in distress thrown in there for good measure.
-AoS takes place in the future? What kind of stupid idea is this. An eclipse? What were they smoking? Also, Soma is Japanese.
-The big argument over the bad localization of AoS. Soma is/isn't an exchange student, is/isn't Japanese.
-Motorcycle Skeletons in CV64.
-Lack of good camera control in CV64.
-Unusual controls in CV64/LoD.
-Insipid story of LoI (the beginnings, the whip, the aftermath).
-Dracula's Origin in LoI.
-Lack of platforming in LoI.
-Insipid sequel with CoD, butchering what CV3's 'story' events were (even though the CV3 events were maybe one page of text).
-Apparent blowing up of all of LoI's flaws with CoD's design team (LoI had similar rooms, CoD has huge similar rooms. LoI has a convoluted map, CoD has a huge convoluted map, etc.).
-Judgment's costuming choices ruining the entire game.
-Harmony of Despair's pandering to the fans, yet (over)charging them for basically already-existing sprite and tile sets.
-LoS's lack of memorable music.
-LoS's Dracula origins story.
-LoS's lack of Castlevania-ness.
Can you feel the hatred? It's really unnecessary to be so extremely rigid about aspects of the game that we have no control over. We are just a fanbase. We have very little pull with developers, designers, and certainly with Konami.
It's great to voice an opinion. Hell, I'll defend LoD in every chance I get, but to be so seething with hatred bile, when it is just a different opinion...? It's a bit extreme.
