I generally don't like first person view games. So I'm pretty meh about this.
I'd be happier with an actual new RE game that somehow resembles the first 3.

I'd ideally love to see modern-gen remakes of all three in one game, considering they all take place at roughly the same time.

Kinda like how RE6 was a bit of a smorgasbord of everyone's stories playing into each other.

But this would be a massive undertaking and remains nothing more than a pipe dream at the moment.

Well, I've gotten quite a bit of faith back in the game. Only the viewpoint was inspired by games like Outlast or Amnesia. The rest of the game, however, is retaining its Resident Evil roots. The director stated that while those games were great experiences, he felt "frustrated" by the inability to defend yourself.

Healing items like herbs will still be in the game, as well as weaponry for the player to fight with. Presumably both melee weapons and firearms (you can obtain an axe in the demo to swing around, and the options menu has display options for ammo count and an aiming reticule).

As well, the demo is not part of the full game. They created a new segment to not spoil the content of the main title. You'll also be playing as a brand new protagonist, as they felt like heroes like Chris or Leon are far too hardened for the game to be scary. There's also an $80 deluxe edition that comes with more story content. Despite my iffyness on the game, I'm still probably gonna buy that against my better judgment.

Moving away from the usual cast is probably for the best, all things considered.

Leon and Chris might be hardened badasses now, but when STARS was only just first being jumped by zombie dogs and Leon was fresh out of the academy you had that fear level work due to character inexperience. It just wouldn't sell the horror return as well to run with any of the familiar faces at this point, unless it was to continue that branch of the franchise story.

I'm just bummed about it with all the story build up over the last few games. We've gone from the death of Wesker, to the tease of Alex Wesker finding the key to immortality, to the destruction of Terragrigia and the mysterious group Jessica is working for, to the introduction of Wesker's son, to the introduction of The Family, and the rebirth of Alex Wesker set up as a new recurring villain.

The series was going a direction that was setting us up for something pretty epic with a Wesker vs. Wesker scenario that was going to be a bit more personal for a lot of the cast, due to the ties several characters share with both Jake and Natalia. This kinda story would've really worked in another action-packed RE game, but I suppose we'll need to wait for Resident Evil 8 or Revelations 3 before getting it.

I just really liked where the series was going gameplay and tone-wise with Revelations 2. Was hoping that's what we were gonna be getting with RE7.

It's still possible--just because the main player character isn't a Redfield or Kennedy or Valentine doesn't necessarily mean no one from the series cast will be present--could just be a new character being introduced into the post-RE6 world, for all we know.

It is still possible, it'd just be really jarring for them to bring a whole Wesker vs. Wesker scenario into this game. It completely goes against the tone of this game (due to this game's dramatically different tone from the rest of the series). Pretty much I said we'd have to wait until RE8 or Revelations 3 to see if we'll continue that storyline.

I mean, I hate the tonal change in this game. But changing the tone back midway through the game would be even worse.

could just be a new character being introduced into the post-RE6 world, for all we know.

I feel so bad for our new protagonist if he gets caught up in the lives of Leon and Chris.

Maybe this new protag will finally be the one to look at Leon and Ada and go "will you two just fuck already and get it over with?!"

To be fair, Damnation hinted at Leon and Ada already doing so, with Ada remarking to Leon with, "When are we going to carry on from where we left off that night?" (paraphrased)

It was basically confirmed in an interview on the Damnation DVD where the film's screenwriter Shotaro Suga stated that the two had a romantic liaison following the events of Resident Evil 4.

Green herbs are coming back for RE7.

...Uh. Yay?

Also, a new merchant might be in the game, with some form of currency being teased.

I liked the merchant from RE4. A mysterious hooded figure everywhere you go and sellin' awesome shit. Whether or not you could afford all those good guns was another thing.

After turning down the President's daughter he'd better shag Ada.

Already said it, but this already happened off-screen. It was hinted at in the Damnation film and confirmed in the DVD's extras.

I think he'd had more than enough of Ashley screaming his name by that point.

Touche. Yet it seems she hadn't had her fill of him yelling "get down".
