Honestly, aside of the combat using whip-like combos and lasso moves, it's not much like GoW at all.
Yeah there's a bunch of giant mythical creatures, but what defines God of War is its over the top violence and sexism, its focus on observational mini puzzles and it's ancient Greek mythos setting.
I think it has more in common with the PS2 Castlevanias in terms of its combat style, and the presentation is more akin to Lord of the Rings and other fantasy stuff.
It's a modern style action game so the base similarities to the likes of GoW are going to happen, as GoW was one of the forefathers of the genre. But LoS isn't copying GoW anymore than the previous PS2 CVs did.
It's not like Gabriel is carrying around double chain-blades and viscerally ripping the guts out of his prey for the hell of it.
