The fact you can do that is the mark of good platforming.

Platforming as a whole basically died in the current generation of gaming. It's completely automated; every game is a mockery of PoP's/Uncharted's magnetic platforming. You don't actually jump anymore; you approach a ledge and trigger a QTE. I don't know if you ever played DMC1, but DMC1 had "qte" platforming in some places, and now that's an industry standard.

LoS DOESN'T have magnetic platforming. You jump, and it's a jump. Your momentum matters, you can fail jumps by jumping too soon or not having a running start and so on. That's why what Corneliab did works; because platforms aren't magnetic and jumps aren't QTEs.

Go and try to do something like that in Uncharted, or Enslaved, or Assassin's Creed (a slightly less offensive title, tho), or the recent PoP games.

You've got to be kidding... every platforming is scripted in LoS. The fact that you could do that is because they didn't scipt it properly. Try that anywhere else. There is one part where you fall down and can't jump back out because of an invisible wall, regardless if you can double jump or not. And almost every hand held requires you to go through the motions instead of skipping through with double jump.

If it were really not magnetic platforming like you say, then why isn't that half the time I can't jump a cross a chasm anywhere else except for where there is a spiderweb for me to "walk" over.

Just go to 1-3, after the troll fight. The whole platforming segment where you first use rappeling. You can mistime jumps, you will fall to your death if don't jump from the edge of the platform and so on.

Now pick up Enslaved or Uncharted. If you're not on a spot where the game registers the beginning of the jumping QTE, you will not even begin to jump. If you are on a spot where the jump is registered, you'll land on destination no matter what. The difference is massive.

I'm on Corneliab's page that not enough was done with the platforming sequences (the Necromancer's Abyss was expecially grating because it was the perfect place to play around and instead it was too conservative and saved you from failed jumps too often), but the system itself is perfect and refreshing in this age of magnetic platforming.

No. Those ones are obvious ones that suck for it anyway (Atleast Enslaved, dunno about Uncharted). Pick up DMC, NGB, LoK and say it isn't as versatile.

I'll give you Ninja Gaiden (but not incidentally it's one of LoS' biggest inspiration), but LoK and any DMC game with significant platforming aren't current generation games.

That's one of my biggest pieces of appreciation over LoS. It's designed as a PS1/PS2 3D game, instead of a PS3/X360 interactive movie.

I thought the platforming in Ninja Gaiden was pretty bad, mainly due to the camera and controls. I guess in terms of level design, it was well implemented for the most part.

That is an awesome video. Nice work! I love the winged double jump look. I haven't got that yet. It looks like it's not worth going back to revisit levels for goods until I get those.

And I agree, things like your video show how great the platforming is, and the opportunities it offers. Who knows what more hidden things and tricks we will all find in LoS these coming months :)

I'm only in Chapter V, but the platforming isn't nearly as good as it could have been. It's way too conservative. Most times you hit an invisible wall, and that's when you know to jump. I've noticed you often just press forward and jump when you hit an invisible wall, and then you'll hit your target point. The LoS levels really aren't set up for a lot of dynamic 3D platforming in the way that Castlevania 64/Legacy of Darkness were. There was more genuine platforming in the PS3 Darksiders demo I've played (and the winged jump seems to be in both Darksiders and Bayonetta). LoS is a bit different than Uncharted in terms of on-rails jumping, but not by much (from what I've played up to Chapter V). Not to mention that there is more SotC and Uncharted sidling and climbing than actual jumping. Plus, I think it's a cop-out that many jumping sequences take place in 2D views where there are no enemies or obstacles that reward timing.

It really blows my mind how modern games don't use 3D space as much/as effectively as some of the early 3D games of the Nintendo 64.

To be fair, the 'winged jump' was Alucard's first. :P

Why modern games? A 3d platformer is still a 3d platformer. It's generation alone shouldn't have an impact on it's ability to be a good platformer.

To each their own, but I love that game. Especially Controls and Camera.

Oh, I mean, the game is probably one of the best action games platformer-wise still. I thought the controls were a bit clunky, especially when compared with the combat.

No one is ever satisfied here, haha.. it all depends on what you want to focus on. I wanted to add, I really love the sound and style of the chain whip when used to climb walls and the like. I thought it was innovative how you can kick through a window or the like, from the chain. You also have to love the parts of the game where you do the jumps in 2D (3 Towers level for example)..

Further experimentation in the clock tower has revealed that the collision for the expandable balance beams from the middle platform are actually loaded prior to raising said platform. By jumping off the vertical platform leading to the first crank, you can actually land on these invisible beams.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to proceed very far. An invisible wall rears its head shortly before reaching the first electric whip-climbing section. This is a bit of a bummer- I wanted to see what would've happened at the second crank if you skipped the first.

I am really liking the extra use of abilities here, even if it is accidental. I hope they realize this potential and flesh it out in the sequel~

That's what I¡m talking about: physic based jumps and not pre-scripted moves. I think that's how MS should adress the next games, those scripted jumps/movements are annopying as hell.

Everything comes full circle
