I'm an old-school Castlevania fan, and I thoroughly enjoyed the game despite how vastly different it was from the previous games. However, I have noticed that most of the crowd that hate the game grew up with IGAvanias, and this is their first time experiencing a series that they were familiar with change its direction, much like in 1997 when some Classicvania fans were angry with SoTN. Just my two cents.

While there is truth to that, others would argue that the situation is not the same since SOTN, while departing from it's linear gameplay in favor of a Metroid format and changing the main character, still looked and felt like a Castlevania game. LOS on the otherhand, changed EVERYTHING from characters to the plot to the overall atmosphere to a point where people were questioning why this was called Castlevania in the first place.

I think you mean some of the crowd.

Yeah, that's pretty much the only difference. Not only that, the soundtrack barely had any familiar tunes, and was just epic orchestra. In fact, that's probably one of my main gripes with the game; I always found myself wishing there were more Castlevania songs.

I think you mean some of the crowd.

Are you sure, because I see a lot of the pro-IGA camp declare their hatred towards Cox.

Either way, it's a definite that the fanbase is more divided than it was before due to LOS' existence.

I agree with everything Uzo-sama said. I think Araujo's problem wasn't that his music is too movie-style, but rather because the music is in the style of a very boring movie. Most of the soundtrack is dithering and a little pretentious, as if being atmospheric with a few LotR-inspired 'epic' moments makes for a good soundtrack. Scores to films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and THE THING are great and highly memorable, unlike most of Lords. And you can be atmospheric yet memorable as well, like Shadow of the Colossus.

That doesn't mean they grew up strictly playing the GBA/DS games. If you're a 90's baby, then yeah, but also a lot of us have been with the series since the late 80's.. that's why I say some of the crowd, not most.

Also, no Dark Priest option. Deal with it.

Good! thank you.

Now I haven't play it yet but I have some things I'd like to say about the gameplay. Castlevania it's an old and popular series, I only know a few games so the first thing I want to know is WHY it's so popular and all of you fans like it so much? What's the identity of the series?
Is not a bad thing to take good elements from other videogames but I think they should take that idea and make it their own. Something that bothers me since the metroidvanias gained popularity is that feel of "copy and paste" they have. I mean they didn't even bother to give a more medieval look to the map, for example it's even the same color and style that Metroid's.
It would be better to take those ideas and shape them up to be more Castlevania-like, if LoS happens to do the same with the stuff they took from GoW and SoC then it's pretty much the same as the metroidvanias, they just took action games as examples instead of RPGish ones. I saw a video of that Stone Titan and it's even necessary to climb the thing and hit it on the weak spots to defeat it, exactly like in SoC.
Also it's pretty lame that the guy throws one single stone at the titan and its already on it knees, what a pansy >_> and very dumb boss too, wasn't enough room in that giant stone head for a brain?
I don't like huge enemies anyway, they're big and impressive but there are normal sized ones far more difficult and tricky.

My point is that I'm still waiting for the series to find its own identity and style, that's why I said it's lost in the "describe with one word" topic.
It would be nice if they retrieve all the good stuff from the old school Castlevanias, there are plenty I believe, and work them so it's not necessary to take elements from other videogames. Maybe then Castlevania would be an example to other series instead of taking them.

What are the games of the series that scream "Castlevania" the most? And what innovative elements LoS introduced that are worth to keep? it's not sarcasm, I'm actually asking.

Hope this comment is not too off, I already stated I didn't play all the Castlevanias but I don't think it's necessary in order to object these things since what I said it's the reason I don't play Castlevania anymore, I'm bored of doing it. The only thing I played recently is Lamment because it's not so similar in the end and I don't have to deal leveling up and a all bunch of useless weapons.

True. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the younger kids did outnumbered us; I'm not sure how many 25-30 year olds participate on forums these days. O__o

Honestly if your looking for a different approch to Castlevania then LOS is right up your alley cause it's basically "fuck tradition, get money." Just be prepaired for some tedious moments(Chupacabras, meh puzzles, titan fights, only 3 of those though) weird pacing from chapters 1 through 3, chapters 4 through 8 are the highlights but the latter chapters fall flat and a neat little surprise ending that has been spoiled already in the poll(well half of it). I say go for it since it's cheap now, just stay away from the DLC, better off watching those on Youtube and this is coming from someone who liked the main game.

The metroidvanias are my favorite, i'm 25 and started with the first game on the NES. I enjoyed 1-4 a lot. #4 is still one of my favorites in the series due to its great controls, atmosphere and music. That being said SotN changed the series for me in a very good way and made me even more interested to continue playing the series. The handheld games so far have been enough to satisfy my appetite for Castlevania. I do admit however that I would love to see a SotN style game on home consoles again  :D

Actually if that's the case then I'm not so interested in LoS because what I was trying to say was that they should take all the good elements from the old school Castlevanias and work them to revitalize the series making a true Castlevania. In other words to bring back the old school games without using elements from other series, a 100% Castlevania. It may sound inflexible but I just want to see what Castlevania is made of, that's all.

to me, the game isn't simply castlevania. it didn't bring any atmosphere or resemblance from neither the classic cv games nor from the "sotn" genre.  i tried to be optimistic but I couldn't consider it to be more than a pretty good action game with nice graphics.
