If there's anything that would make me hate the classic Castlevania games, it most certainly isn't the games themselves; but rather, that ignorant fraction of their fanbase.

To me, making a game Castlevania isn't as hard as, say, making a game Silent Hill. As long as there's haunted shit, cool gothic environments, and cool music to whip said haunted shit to, I'm in.

Actually he just about perfectly summed up what the series was in the original 2d generation and even a bit of 3d games atleast the 64 ones.

The series was originally based on the old classic horror movies they were spose to be dark and creepy with haunted castles and crazy creatures. It all ended up bein set to fantastic music which was really hit or miss in those days. CV got lucky with great music.

It wasnt until SoTN that the series went from dark and creepy to "gothic" and regal

I agree.  I think most of the people complaining that LoS is "not Castlevania" are not taking the whole history of the series into account.  Castlevania has drastically changed direction before, both in gameplay and in tone and atmosphere.  Many of the characteristics that people say define Castlevania really only define the last decade or so of Castlevania, and not the entire history of the series.

I won't response to those who said that I don't know anything about Castlevania, I will quote the Phantom of the Opera

And there are news. I won't translate the interview because I don't know anything about Castlevaia, so, why bring my non-knowledge abput Castlevania to you?
But the most important part is that the Graphic Engine of LOS is one of the best 10 in the world.

Everything comes full circle

OK, long post;

I don't understand why people say LoS is "not Castlevania"? What exactly are they talking about? What do they know that I don't? The developers already said they're keeping the stuff they like and leaving other things out. Nobody knows what this means, yet people are already writing this game off as "not Castlevania enough". For all we know, LoS may be OMG SUPER FAITHFUL to the original Castlevania concept. More so than any of the IGAvanias before it.

People seem to think that Mercurysteam will throw everything out the window and create a game that has nothing whatsoever to do with the series. Now, what developer would be so retarded? For what reason would they remove the stuff that the very foundation of Castlevania is built upon? It's like if Flagship Studios had put Mickey Mouse in The Minish Cap instead of Link. I mean, why would they? If I was a developer with the Castlevania licence in my hands, I would put Dracula in it immediately. Who wouldn't? The only person who'd deliberately leave Dracula AND Belmonts out of a CV is - wait for it - IGA!

LoS will more than likely have a Belmont, Dracula, remixed music from the series and everything else. If Mercurysteam decides to ignore the pretentious crap that's been going on in the storyline since IGA took over, and go back to what CV is really about, i'm all for it! :D

If you're refering to http://www.rtve.es/noticias/20090712/tecnologia-mercury-steam-entre-las-diez-mejores-del-mundo/284461.shtml, there is nothing on this article deserving to be translated, really. Only Mercury Steam droping rose petals all over themselves.

One thing worries me, though:

I've never played Jericho either... which is why I shouldn't be commenting on whether using its engine is a call for concern ;P

We don't even know if that's the case anyway, they could just be talking about what they learned from that project and how easily it translates or aides this new one.

Also I appreciate any and all articles about this game, including translated ones.

There's no need to "Take your ball and Go" just because of one comment on the Internet.  If you have info, and want to share it, that's fine.  If not, that's fine too.  Surely such information will surface eventually.

In which case they'd deserve to rot in the well of ignorance they have built up for themselves.

How many times does it have to be explained to you before you get it? That is not the case. Jesus christ.

Then why don't you explain it, Giz?  And don't just throw up a list of Youtube links to songs from different games.  We've all heard those songs before, and that doesn't prove anything.  Try to actually list out the key components of what defines Castlevania, and be specific.  I would be interested to read what you come up with.

Other then musical and stylistic consistency, course! Which is the primary thing that LoS is changing and people are complaining about.

It has nothing to do with IGA, or Kojima, or Yamane. The musical consistency is both self-evident and independant from the composer, as are the influences and tones of the visual style.

Despite each game having its own individual take on the style, each also independantly builds off of the style to form its own sub-identity. There is a core identity and style within Castlevania which is epitomized by heavy gothic-horror influences, mythology and a hint of camp/cheesiness. It takes itself seriously, but it also knows when to laugh at itself.

A portion of the screenshots provided by marto, from the chapel. And now, a quote that he made on the subject;
Quote
Doesn't matter which of these shots you look at, doesn't matter how many years your eye gazes back, the second the game turns on, despite of drawing for the cover, character designer, composer, the game has felt like Castlevania. Despite Iga, or sexy-asian-composer girl, or Yamane, or Kojima, or Hokkai, or anyone else, it was Castlevania.

It was angels, and blood, and zombies, and Romania, and Dracula, and mummies, and it was a side-scrolling game, and a fighting game, and an RPG action game, and a Dynasty warriors game, and an adventure N64 game, and anything else.

Yet it was always Castlevania. It was creepy, haunting, light-hearted, heavy themed, but always Castlevania.

It was Vampire Killer, and Belmonts, and Morrises, and Alucard, and everything that we, as fans, have loved of this series for over 20 years for some, 2 for others, of however long it might be.

It's a series that's been reimagined, but ALWAYS with respect to the previous.
