I'm on a limited budget, and there are other games that I could get for 800msp.  The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile which I highly recommend if you're looking for a gory 2D bloodfest, comes to mind.  Outland is another, releases April 27th.

Well, I've gone and spent what points I had on the TrialsHD + Big Thrills pack (800msp all in).  I'm also on a limited budget so I'll likely wait until the new DLC is on offer.  Man, Trials is tough . . .

I have a ps3 so I've played it,but I am so glad it's out now for two reasons
1. People can stop being angry about it
2. Now they can get Resurrection put out as fast as possible.

I thought Reverie was pretty great so I recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it yet.

Man, there's so much potential in a 3D CV..the issues are probably emerging because of the producer's loss of imagination, no actual motivation nor budget of making a very good 3D CV game out of it..one can only hope for the future..

Haha, what's interesting is I am writing my own document theory on what a good 3D CV would be (: Trust me, it's not like the rest it's very unique haha I put a lot of thought in to it and will be posting it here within a few weeks  because this going to take a while to write! ^_^

The problem is that, for whatever reason, no one in the game-making biz these last 10 years has really been able to successfully boil down the CV formula into something that translates properly into 3D.  I don't know what it is.  Anyone who's been a fan of the series for a long time can give you a pretty rough estimate of how a next gen CV SHOULD play.  It's not rocket science, yet Iga and his team couldn't get it right......and MS, despite making a stellar action game featuring a chain flailing Belmont....failed to really capture the essence of this franchise in a way that could have sucked in every hardcore fan and left them begging for more.

I'm sure I'll get flamed to hell for saying this, but Legacy of Darkness....IMO......is the only 3D title to date that actually got it right.  That game presented a solid template for bringing this series into the third dimension.  Great, atmospheric environs, lots of classic creatures and bosses, a good sense of progression through the Dark Keep, classic CV inspired gameplay, great music, a useable (but not overdone) inventory system, and a story that wasn't full of facepalm moments. Unfortunately, it also came equipped with crappy graphics, sluggish controls, overly simplistic combat, and camera issues.  BUT.....the overall design and concept worked so much better than LoI, CoD, and even LoS......it was just lacking in the technical departments. I'd give anything to see a LoD Chronicles game redone by a competent dev team using a modern game engine and an updated combat system.  Or...at the very least.....a remade Simon Belmont feature using the same template.

You aren't gonna get flamed dude. I agree with you on this wholeheartedly. When CV64/LoD first came out i was very worried and disappointed that Konami no-longer wanted to continue the 2D tradition. However, now that enough time has gone by and every other 3Dvania that has come and gone since CV64/LoD has sucked, i can safely say for certain that their first 3D CV attempt is where they got it right. It took some time for many of us to see that, but CV64/LoD got it right.

There are a few enlightened members here who would agree with you (myself included). I feel that the entire CV64/LoD storyline is one of the best in the series, and it/they had the best atmosphere since SCVIV. The N64 CVs were the only games in the entire series that actually made me jump at certain points in the gameplay & cut scenes; no game outside of the survival horror genre has ever caused me to do that.

That said, those games are still a radical departure from the IGAvanias. IGA's CV games are best described as stylized Gothic (I'll ignore the Metroid rip-off remarks for now), whereas CV64/LoD had far less emphasis on art direction, and lacked IGA's attention to detail and nods to older games in the series. It's too bad that IGA had to have the reigns of CV for so long and run it into the ground like he did; if he only made 2-3 games and stopped there, people would have a much higher opinion of the guy.

I've always thought that cv 64/LoD did a fantastic job translating the classic titles into 3D. It has the classic atmosphere, the platforming, the enemies. It feels so much like CV 1-3.
I think a lot more people feel 64/LoD translated the classic better into 3D than Lords of Shadow did, though I think that did a good job as well. It had a darker take on the atmosphere of the classic, really only in the castle though, but I thought it did a good job with the platforming.

I feel 64 gets beat on too much. It surprises me, really

Here's my take:

Cv64/LoD were good platformers at that time and I liked the concept of a primary weapon and a secondary weapon, but the controls felt odd and didn't seem to respond well.

LoS had great graphics and an awesome battle system, but didn't feel CV enough.  I also liked how you could find upgrades that made Gabriel stronger.  Also, like CV64 and LoD, LoS went stage by stage instead of having the RPG elements of the IGAvanias.

The ideal CV in my opinion would be a marrage of CV64/LoD and LoS.  Essentially, the LoS battle system and graphics with the CV64/LoD atmosphere and level design.

I think Lament of Innocence really nailed 3D Castlevania.  Yes, it has severe problems in the bad level design/lack of platforming, but in every other respect I think it's damn-near perfect.  The problem is that the level design issue brings the game so far down that it's easy to overlook all the other great elements.

Legacy of Darkness is a great game, but I don't think it feels much like Castlevania.  It goes the opposite way of LoI in that some parts are too platformy and too lacking in enemies.  At least Castlevania 64 features a whip wielding Belmont relative.  (Yup, I realize Schneider is unlockable in LoD, but I'm going by the main quest for each game.)  There were a few moments in CV64 that had me thinking, "Now THIS is classic CV."  The one I remember most was when I was trying to navigate some platforms sticking out of a wall while dodging medusa heads.  I didn't experience any of those moments in Legacy of Darkness.

That's exactly how I feel, if LOS was made like that it would have made alot of people happy.

I think each attempted, LoD/CV64, LoI/CoD and LoS went a different way, but each had their own CV strengths, pieces that no doubt would be vital for a true 3D CV, but IMO, all don't come close. However, I've been thinking that, perhaps, if all three were combined into one game, that just might be near hit the sweet spot of what a REAL 3D CV should be like.
