I don't know, I think they should include candle-whipping in some form, but I don't think it has to be exactly "break candle which drops heart, use heart for subweapon". Maybe candle-whipping will play some significance in relation to shadows (nothing creates shadows quite like a flickering candle). Who knows.
As far as hearts, again I think they can get away with coming up with something other than hearts are dropped by broken candles and used to power items. In Simon's Quest, hearts were mainly used as money (and it would have made a lot more sense for the monsters to just drop gold instead). CV Bloodlines used jewels instead of hearts, as did CV64 and LoD. So I don't think it would be completely inappropriate for them to step away from hearts in LoS. Remember, the morningstar whip was a series identifier up until SotN, and that game (and others since then) did not have it and still worked fine.
