The somewhat sarcastic and subtle humor about the series gives it its charm. It allows the game to be serious and completely not serious at the same time. Allowing you to mix and match these moments into a perfect even package.

Much less heaven forbid a video game to ever have a silly aspect to it. What a shame that a franchise based on monster movie baddies, in a castle controlled by Count Dracula, should ever have anything silly in it.

Never thought of the heart as silly. It fits with the blood-vampires-Leon & Sara-souls-captured-in-candles-thing.

Hearts were fitting considering, around the time of the first game, a LOT of NES games(in particular) used hearts as either power-ups, curency or energy replenishers. I mean, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 2, Kid Icarus, Popeye, just to name a few.

I don't know, I think they should include candle-whipping in some form, but I don't think it has to be exactly "break candle which drops heart, use heart for subweapon".  Maybe candle-whipping will play some significance in relation to shadows (nothing creates shadows quite like a flickering candle).  Who knows.

As far as hearts, again I think they can get away with coming up with something other than hearts are dropped by broken candles and used to power items.  In Simon's Quest, hearts were mainly used as money (and it would have made a lot more sense for the monsters to just drop gold instead).  CV Bloodlines used jewels instead of hearts, as did CV64 and LoD.  So I don't think it would be completely inappropriate for them to step away from hearts in LoS.  Remember, the morningstar whip was a series identifier up until SotN, and that game (and others since then) did not have it and still worked fine.

So I guess it's safe to say this game won't bode well for the original canon. And why is it every interview always asks what Kojima's involvment is? He's an advisor to the project, that's established already! I bet the next interview will ask that same damn question "so wuts Kojima doing with this"

I'm still eager to hear where the hell IGA is.

Maybe IGA is working on a Hideo Kojima franchise? Snatcher DS? Zone of the Enders 3? Hehe.

Soooo, Mercurysteam created the craptacular Clive Barker's Jericho? It's definitely not a good sign. Then again, WayForward did an excellent job on Contra 4, despite them making crappy games in the past.

At least this answers the question of whether this was supposed to be a new Intellectual Property or not.

They clearly say that it was meant to be a Castlevania game from the get-go, but Konami was waiting to see if it would muster up to the franchise.

Good job on these interviews.  Good information.

I wonder why none of the interviewers have asked about Iga?  That's kind of interesting.

Excellent interview find Ahasverus.

Three years ago . . . IGA would have been privvy/on board . . . could Lords of Shadow have started out as a Castlevania movie tie-in game?  Clive Barker's Jericho not being that good a game / IGA busy with other series games/largely dismissive (or unable to talk) of the movie . . .

Still, the interviewee says: "THEIR NEXT GEN CASTLEVANIA".

It's all very interesting, and shows that there's so much going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

- There are rumours that said that this project wasn't a Castlevania at the beginning. Can you clarify that?
It was a Castlevania since the zero day. But we wanted the world to be ecpectant, so, we revealed it part by part, slowly; Konami also wanted to see how the product was going and if it deserved to have the "Castlevania" tittle. When we sent them the first demo, they didn't doubt about that.
They knew that this would be the newCastlevania, but they made the decision, not to anounce it until E3; it was right, the bomb was huge.
We beg people to not doubt about the fact that Mercurysteam had a Castlevania in its plans since we wrote the first letter in a white sheet.

YESSSSSSSSSS!

That is all I need to hear to rest a little easier now.

This interview is much better than the last one, but still so much remains to be learned...  It's odd how little is being said about gameplay --how little is being said about continuity --how little is being said about the teaser trailer from last year.  It's become irritating how much these guys are going out of their way to spoon feed us with all this "rebirth" nonsense...  These nimrods in the gaming press are smart enough to ask the right questions, but all we keep getting is this rebirth teaser crap --it's downright maddening that no one has asked about IGA's departure.  The press ought to be grilling these noobs over their "Castlevania credentials" and giving us some reasons to believe in what they're doing.
