I haven’t played many of the latter games in the series (Curse of Darkness, Judgement, Harmony of Despair, Arcade or even Rebirth).
It felt good however to get behind and support change in the form of Lords of Shadow, and see more of an adult, grittier side to proceedings. Admittedly, I didn’t think too much of its storyline. I didn’t like the slow pacing, inclusion of Satan, or the references to alt-canon characters.
Ayami Kojima’s Soma Cruz painting with the castle and blood red moon in the background is one of my favourites. It has a haunting, numinous beauty which complements Aria of Sorrow. For all IGA’s faults I think Aria of Sorrow really captures a high moment: a unique series storyline, rough, washed-out palette and colouring, areas of solitude and isolation, engaging game play with the Tactical Soul System, an understated soundtrack, and superb castle map and pacing. I feel it’s a well-rounded and cohesive product.
Belmont’s Revenge is probably my most-played Castlevania game (pssst, Neobelmont, you’ve got to try it!).
I don’t like tacked-on game modes.
I still love watching old Hammer horror films.
I think Jorge is one of the best moderators on t’internet.
