Well, the presence of a vampire, most notably at a lead position of evil. And all the games had at least one vampire present(be it just Dracula, Alucard in the Sorrow games, or Gilles de Rais, Carmilla, Elizabeth Bartley, Olrox, Walter Bernhard, Joachim Armster, Brauner or Stella and Loretta).
At least if they are going to purge this game of a lot of the traditional CV elements, split it from the traditional CV series(er, the Japanese CV series) and just call this one Castlevania, and keep the Akumajou Dracula series going as a separate one, because face it, this one ISN'T Akumajou Dracula if it doesn't have Dracula, nor any sort of vampire, yet the original series shouldn't "die" for something like this.
Of course, this is all only if the article is true(worst case scenario). It's like, have you ever heard the one where 3dfx Interactive were interested in rebooting the Splatterhouse series? This was before Namco Bandai opted to reboot it themselves. Well, 3dfx Interactive wanted it to be a sorta-reboot/sequel, taking place after Splatterhouse 3, in a futuristic world. Here's what the rep wrote:
"This is set in the future and has no ties to the originals other than the fact that the main character is still alive."
"The game takes place years after the third, in a futuristic, post-modern world, similar to Shadowcaster. The game, although based upon Splatterhouse and variants, will not feature any extreme gore or the monsters from the first three games, but rather its own storyline about a personal quest for revenge and anguish. The developers are wishing to bring the game to a FPS perspective but this has also been debated as whether to make it a FPS (Doom) or a Third-Person Shooter (FAKK2)."
"The game will contain hand-to-hand combat as well as shooter sequences with a small amount of puzzle-solving. Imagine smooth transitions between shooting and fighting and you will have Splatterhouse's combat system."
"As to keep up with modern times, Rick will no longer be featured in the muscle-bound, Jason-Voorhees clothing, but in more traditional, futuristic clothing. It has not been decided what he will look like, but it is confirmed he will have shoes and will not feature the same hockey-mask."
"So, the Terror Mask returns, and I suggested that it be fused with technology for the future. I've heard people tell me that it's not a good idea to have it stray so far from what Splatterhouse was made for but I think it's neccesary...you tend to run out of ideas once people have already done them. I just went to watch Saw III and that completely blew any chance I had out of the water of suprising people, so a modern approach was voted to be taken. The gore will still be featured in flashbacks but people have told me that we're going to kill it if we do that."
"I personally think that moving the story away from a horror theme would allow us more creative freedom to do more modern things with the plot. I've already had a few people tell me that setting it in the future would not be a good idea and would lose a lot of its core popularity, but I believe that it's neccesary to show people something new in terms of what we could do with Splatterhouse."
The final sentence says it all. It's what companies say to justify major change whenever they decide to reboot something and turn their back on the original source material.
