having a rugged, older hero as the main character of the main game instead of a younger person is one instant reason for me. (and that's not counting julius mode, which are only unlockable in the sorrow games)

I, personally, loved that they went for a protagonist that harkened back to the original games when the Belmonts were just warrior/barbarian like figures. Gabriel is a pretty strong Belmont like character, only issue I have is how tiny his head was compared to his body, his anatomy is very awkward.

but then there's that obvious beard stubble never worn by the belmonts in the first castlevanias, and the belmonts in the first few games were around their 20's in their games and gabriel looked decades older in his story...

I think they should try to find a middle ground between Gabriel and Trevor Belmont in CoD.

Can I surmise you entered the series through IGA's games..?

Because a 16 years old surviving a casle of demons is sooo much more realistic. (Juste Belmont)

fyi Juste is 18 when he enters the Demon Castle; he only inherited the VK at 16, right before Maxim goes on his training expedition which lasts 2 years prior to the start of HoD.

it's established that 18-20 years is the ideal age for when a Belmont is at his prime, although there are some exceptions (Christopher, Julius)

Please don't talk about realism in Castlevania.

I kinda like my heroes in between fresh-faced greenhorns to battle wizen leather-skinned warriors. I mean, if you think about it, in the original canon, most Belmonts's adventures were their actual first time confronting Dracula's trap-ridden abode and the Prince of Darkness himself. They might've been trained for the situation, or did side hunts of monsters, but it WAS genuinely their first experiences against Drac himself. It's kinda like, "My family has had this business that's been passed on from generation to generation, and I've been trained to take over the reins. I have the knowledge, but now it's time for me to take over and even though I've got training, having this much power and taking on the responsiblity officially IS new to me, so let's see what I got!!"

it just instantly tells me they strayed too far from the rest of the series and makes me wonder what they were thinking

Stubbles are the modern-cool. I doubt it's that marketable to showcase barbarians like the 80's or early 90's, as much as I'd like it to be. It's a pretty minor thing so I don't feel strongly about it. If anything, his outfit, Combat Cross, and etc. stray more.

Stray? How? Id say he looks more like Simon than the prototype Gabe does. Mainly due to his outfit being based on Simon's from 2. Ive never actually seen anyone actually have an issue with the way he looks itself. Just the story and the Land of the Lycans areas mostly.

Gabriel only matches color-wise, but it's pretty much a tunic over strange plated armor that covers his entire body.
Simon wore tights with normal plate armor. And it was amazing because he wore tights.

But yeah, the outfit itself is just as distinct from the classic heroes as any of Ayami's, in terms of actual clothing details, ornamentation, etc. It's its own thing, which I'm sure they were intending considering it was the base for the other Brotherhood members. It's pretty unique.

Stubbles are just added hair though. I guess it's a design element used to make Gabriel seem brooding or despaired, which is pretty off from traditional Castlevania Belmonts, but his outfit just communicates something a lot more differently to me than his stubble, because stubbles used in design nowadays are also usually used to make heroes look tougher, so it's all in-line with the old barbarian design. Same end goal, different approach.

i really have no idea what his outfit is supposed to signify besides the belts and utilities. i guess it's the same as WARRIOR like the skimpy barbarian outfits considering his inhuman proportions and ARMOR, but it just feels diluted to me by the tunic. idk im just traikgifngfgd;ghgfhgfh
