I loved the game, but I still don't know wtf this "achievement" is.

They shipped copies. Whoopdeedoo, so does everyone.
Shipped units are requested by retailers acording to demand, initial shipments are around 200k-300k, the other 700k are requested to the publisher and payed to them. Not everyone ships 1M, Okami would have killed for shipping a Million, Bayonetta would have double killed for shipping 1M in over a month, it shipped 1.2M in about a year so yeah

Everything comes full circle

What sales figures?

The only figures Konami is concerned about.

LoS probably sold around 300k to gamers worldwide so far; probably a bit more. Japan is missing, and if KojiPro plays it well, that could add some 150-200k over a couple months.

At this point, Konami is happy because they shipped 1 million units (at this point they can't care less if they sell 1 copy or 1 million in terms of earnings; the game was certainly profitable to them). The way this works, Konami is selling the game to retailers and not to gamers in the first place. LoS shipped a lot because distributors saw a 3D game with good graphics and all and thought "this will sell" and stocked 50 copies, while probably when they see the umpteen 2D game they go "ok, 5 copies will last me one year".

It was the first goal Konami had. Now, sales for LoS have certainly been "lackluster" if you compare it to God of War or Metal Gear, but nobody could expect that. If Japan brings the sales to customers to 500k, and over the next year the game crawls to 800-900k worldwide, the distributors will have faith in the sequel too.

Stop it, just stop it now, 1million shipped means 1million sold BY KONAMI and that's all that matters, it doesn't matter if only 1 of that million gets sold by retailers, Konami earned more than $60000000 (yeah, count those zeroes) and that's enough for making them happy, a lot, for a company that relies on 2 franchises, it's good news.
Don't try to make this to seem lesser than what it is, it's a great achievement after all.

Not 60 millions for sure. Last I checked retailers bought most games at around 27€ (35ish dollars). Make that some 30 millions; certainly more than LoS' budget.

Judging by VGChartz, the game has sold roughly 420,000 copies, not including Japan, which totally makes it the best selling CV ever.

VGChartz isn't very reliable, but gooooood news.

VGChartz is usually under the mark, so I don't see too much of an issue in using it.

More like not even in the same range in some cases. Completely unreliable.

Don't you think that Lords of Shadow should have had a power metal soundtrack to fit with its epic fantasy style? Imagine fighting Satan to this song.
